Start with large art that speaks to you. Some people love art that has nothing at all to do with the colors in a room. Others want to pick up colors they already have (gray sea, golden sand, you get the idea). A good size is 2/3 the length of the sofa. Then add some pillows that have personality. Put one of those small gray pillow in your car to carry around when shopping for new pillows. No extra rug on the carpet. The photo shows the right size.

The first thing I would do is add lighting to the room. You'll need to do this anyway at some point, and any changes you make to wall colour will be influenced by the lighting. What you don't want to do is repaint, buy new furniture items, and lastly change the lighting only to find that it all looks unexpectedly different with different lights and different light bulbs - and it will. I am guessing that you have mostly central lighting in your room, and the corners are darker. This is what is making your room very gloomy. (See any horror movie.) Your fix may be as simple as adding lighting that washes along the walls, especially in the corners. I like wall sconces that simply plug into the wall. You can put them just about anywhere without changes in wiring, so it's a good solution where you don't want to use a floor lamp or table lamp. Experiment with bringing floor and table lamps in from other rooms to see how this works, then once you know where you need the light, look for lighting specific to your room. Search for articles about "layered lighting". You need ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Be aware of the colour temperature of your light bulbs which will influence how colours look in your room. Do this before you make any other big changes.

Hi Salonva, thank you! This is my first ever layout I’m planning, so I’m super excited for new thoughts & ideas. Rug dimensions: 5.3’ x 7.3’ Sofa length would be around 6’ to leave at least 6 in. on each side. I might forget the table and just do 2 boho poufs instead.
