I thought it was an Instagram thing. Like if you have an instagram account, you can link your posts to FB. I may be wrong though. Someone will explain it to us!

Ohhhhh....I didn't think of Instagram. But I don't do Instagram, either.

If you click on the hashtag word, it will take you to other people's posts with that same hashtag. I don't use Facebook, but that's how it works on Instagram and Twitter.

I don't really "do" FB, but have a fake account that allows me to poke around. I do ???subscribe??? follow??? IDK a local group that reports things like crime and accidents, police activity, etc. I get a message on FB when they post something, which is often. I don't get FB messages on my phone or anywhere, I have to go to FB to see their posts. I used to check when I'd drive somewhere involving the freeway because it is often backed up or closed because of accidents. Now I just look at it every day or two. Our local newspaper is worthless about what is going on here.

What I am mystified by is someone will post under the main post nothing but just a name. No @ or anything, just a name that appears under theirs. What the heck is that? It drives me nuts...sometimes there will be 50 people who post; no comment just the name that they type below theirs.

A person will do this so that that friend whose name they typed will come and read whatever it is that the person commented on. It’s like a “Hey friend, you gotta see this!” The friend will get a notification that their name has been mentioned with a link to the mention.

Thanks Sammy and Bpath. Another reason I couldn't use FB. I would expect people to just send a link to their friend so 4,000 other people don't have to see it or scroll past it. A whole culture I'm not a good fit for!

I use Facebook a LOT but don't do insta or twitter and I too don't quite get the whole #thing. I am with the old ones. I don't think I am that old, but when it comes to this stuff, I guess maybe I am? I will join Suzieque

Oly, you can just direct a post or a link to one, two, or three friends. Sharing by tagging is lazy.

I'm not much of a Facebook user but hashtags seem to tie related posts together making them easier to search for and find other posts that are tagged with the same tag.

For instance, if posts are tagged "#sewing" and you wanted to read more posts about sewing, you could click the hashtag (when found on Facebook it's a link) and pull up a bunch of posts that folks had tagged "#sewing".

It seems this "form" of Facebook URL will find posts that are tagged #sewing: (of course if you're on Facebook, you can just click the tag)

Personally, I post privately so only friends and family can see my posts/images but some folks enjoy getting "Likes", enjoy sharing or just want to be helpful.
