I agree that jewelry, doll and china collection must be looked at by a professional. You never know, after watching those "Antique Road Shows", what treasures you might find - just because they dont make things anymore like they used to. IF they are worth good chunk, sell it and put the money into her funds. You never know what disaster will strike and what SHE will need. Money is like water, and She is still alive. You all have your own families and houses to take care of. Dont waste her money on storage. Sell it now and then sell the house. I also agree that if anyone has any sentimental feeling or wants to have something from her things, let them take and keep - years later you will regret just selling it to strangers. Just apply the same rules to all - either all take 1-2 items for free as memory, or all pay fare value. My husband's grandpa just gifted me his mother's (great grandma for my husband) chain watch, it was all broken, not working, I spent $80 to repair it, and it is worth maybe $80-100. BUT it has her name and date that it was gifted, etc. so it is a part of family history and I am the only female in the family who is interested in keeping it. Re the family issue - I do agree that you as parents need to set example to your kids - get them out of the picture and discussion until three siblings agree on what to do, and clarify what legal role your brother plays. What a shame that they dont go to see grandma but got their eyes set on the STUFF. And please, if all argument is about $10 desk, have the kid pay for it. Teach them to earn things just like grandma did. Teach them lessons now, even though it maybe too late if they are grown up as you describe them.

Hi fori, thanks for posting that. It's definitely food for thought for me because I'm similar about wanting to remodel a kitchen where I'm living. I've rented enough places and cooked in my parents and in-laws kitchens, and if the layout isn't something that seems natural to me, then it starts to bug me over time. Until I read your comment, I hadn't realized that I've been subconsciously holding that assumption: that whoever comes after us, will be remodeling the kitchen anyway to suit themselves. Given the points about ductless/ducting, I'd like to ask this question, even though it wasn't my initial posting question: Immediately behind the range wall is a 3-season, enclosed porch (lots of windows, sparsely furnished with patio-type furniture). The easiest technically would seem to be simply duct out of the house into that space. If we put in a ducting hood that vented into the 3-season porch, would that look worse to a future buyer than no duct at all? Would an inspector look askance at that? I'm not up on all the code for how you are allowed to vent range hoods for electric ranges. (While that means the smell and grease would end up out in that porch, it's a lot more "rustic" and easier to clean and air out than the kitchen.) Thanks again!

Oh, I really like that little house out back. #27 I think in the photos. Those houses are lovely, but too big to live in, for me. We 'grew up' playing in a Kirtland Cutter home and it had some of those same details. Similar sized rooms, but more like photo #14 in style. Interior (back in the day) And now....this is the largest room and it's not as big as it looks in the picture. Believe it or not, the balcony used to be the master bedroom and the other bedrooms were on the opposite side of the house. The library, dining room, sunroom and other main floor rooms were all smaller than this one. It was for dances and such, back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Now they have weddings there and I'm guessing those upper level tables are probably bistro sized.
