Although beautiful, the wrap is very specific. I have never used one, and I really have never seen my friends or co- workers wear one.

When would your MIL use this taking into account her lifestyle?

Do you wear them and find them to be a needed accessory?

I love it. I bought a similar one from Lord and Taylors going out of business sale. It can be used in many different ways, perfect for outdoor dining in the spring and summer when it gets cool at night. It looks great thrown over an arm of a chair ready for a snuggle while you read or watch TV. To be honest I have a huge collection of cashmere and can never have enough.

Only you can know. They always look chic as advertised, but I never like the way they look on me. Too unstructured. But maybe she only cares about comfort?

This can be tricky. Would she know what it is or would she think it’s a ‘shawl’?

If she’s an active, put together dresser who stays current with her wardrobe she may love it.

If she thinks it’s a shawl she may not appreciate that you think she needs one, unless she’s at the stage in her life where she actually wants one. Tricky.

The reason I'm unsure is that my lifestyle is very different than hers. I'm more rough and tumble and, while I love the look of something like that, I don't really live a lifestyle that it would be useful in (or survive in, more to the point). My MIL is more the refined lady sort. Playing bridge and reading for hours in the study, travelling and visiting. I picture it being a bit of a luxury and comfort while doing those things, but I don't actually do those things myself, so I'm not really sure if someone who does them would use a cashmere wrap while doing them. Does that make sense?

ETA: she is definitely current in her wardrobe. I would describe her style as classic and chic.

Then it would be a great gift no matter what it’s called. Wrap, shawl or pashmina.

If the item is for travel I would get her the very finest tissue thin cashmere you can find. I have a couple of large pashminas that can be drawn through my wedding ring they are so thin. But they are warm when draped about one’s shoulders. I always take one on trips and frequently throw it around a blazer or coat for an extra layer of warmth. It’s a lovely gift and very practical, too. I’ve been wearing them since my thirties And have them in several colors. Nordstrom’s has good quality If you are looking at retailers.

I would love such a gift although it is not something I would purchase for myself . I think that is why it is a lovely gift. I received a similar wrap and it is so lovely that although I do not get an opportunity to wear it out often, they do not work with needing to assist young school age children, I do keep it draped on my reading chair instead of a thick blanket to cozy up with.

I would and I do. It’s almost a joke, one goes with me everywhere. And honestly mine are pretty rough and tumble. In a pinch they have gathered apples, and tomatoes, served as a facemask, swaddled a baby, leashed a dog, clothed a baby who got sick and had no more clean clothes available, become an impromptu baby bjorn and acted as a grocery bag. I would never be on a plane without one, and I feel the same about most public air conditioned spaces. I have cashmere, raw silk, and linen ones. So useful.

A gift like that would be wasted on me, no matter how lovely.

I would use it indoors when I’m snuggled in with a good book. Or out on our patio if there’s a chill.

From your description it sounds like something she might like and use. I have a fondness for wraps and scarves and own quite a few ranging from tissue weight cashmere to wool challis and price ranges from Lands End to White and Warren and Hermes. I have three Garnet Hill wraps that I bought at half price - a beige one that is draped on my sofa, a medium blue one and a cream cable stitch. This year for Christmas I gave one in deep plum to my son's GF and a few years ago gave my DDIL a chestnut one. They can be quite versatile. If we're going out to dinner or a show I usually take a wrap with me. The light weight ones that Kswl mentioned can be even rolled and carried in a purse.

I live in jeans and t shirts but I still use them regularly. I have one on the back of my wing chair and often wrap it around my shoulders when I'm reading or watching TV. When flying I pack my White and Warren travel wrap in my tote where I can reach it if the cabin is chilly or if I want to nap since it's a little larger. The GH ones are nice quality, not too large (86x27) and don't don't snag like the really thin ones.

From what you have told us about her.... I think she would like it. If I were taller and dressed up more, I would wear it. I dress casually most of the time and I am 5'2 so I would feel that would swallow me whole.

I do think it is beautiul. It have been watching Madam Secretary and Tea Leoni's character wears very similiar wraps like that one in most the episodes. I always admire the look on her when I see it.

Exactly what Roarah said — it‘s not something I’d buy myself, but would love it as a gift. I’ve been given two over the years and have many uses for them ... besides for warmth, they look lovely draped over things.

I have a couple from https://bleusalt.com. A long one in dark gray and a shorter one in Navy (I like best). I have a number of Bleusalt items. They are great for me. I had a less expensive wrap some years ago and remember all it did was cling to my clothes, and was so annoying. So, the right one is key.

My daughter bought me one from the Bleusalt site. I took it but thought I would never use it. I was wrong, I love it. Mine is black and a very tight weave and long. I have it on right now. Yes, she will love it.

Daisy- my life is often dirty and bumpy so I have wraps at various pricepoints which I grab based on expectation of the day. I do recall however that the baby emergency was at a swanky event where my FIL was being recognized so the kids were there at his request. Baby's(toddler actually) naked bum got wrapped in a lovely very soft cashmere.

I either have the one linked or one very similar to it in black. I really can’t remember where I got it. I love it, especially for travel. It works with jeans and with cocktail dresses.

Those are really lovely and from the way you describe her, I think your MIL will enjoy it. Does she like to accessorize? If she does, can I suggest you add a shawl pin as well? Etsy has so many to choose from at affordable prices.

DH bought me a travel wrap for Christmas 2019 which I actually did I get to use at my early 2020 conferences. I could use it as a wrap or even if I was cold in the hotel room. I went to Florida twice and it wasn’t warm. So, yeah, I would use this.

I wear this style often-- and have wanted this particular one for years! I just never caught the sale at the right time and in the right mood. I wear the style both relaxing at home and out and about. I think they easily elevate a long sleeve tshirt or turtleneck.

However, i have bought similar styles for my sisters and mom and none of them are comfortable wearing them. I think they are too self conscious about the draping and wearing and honestly, they swallow my mother's slight frame. I don't fuss or worry and I think they look great just casually tossed over my shoulder... but i have broad shoulders and a larger frame.

I think that would be a fabulous gift. I live in the South, and I would use it all the time. I'd use it when the weather was a bit chilly but I didn't want to wear a coat or jacket. And I'd use it during the summer when the A/C is set to about 0, and I'm freezing during every trip to a restaurant, theater, or the movies.

Daisy - I hope she likes it. I debated what color to get my son's girlfriend and actually ordered both the black and the deep plum (listed as port on the website). The plum was very dark, not quite eggplant and since she has long dark hair and wears black often I decided that the port offered a different look. This was the first year that I bought her a 'real' gift and I was wondering what she might think. I was relieved when she immediately wrapped it across her shoulders and said that she liked it. Checking with my son later he mentioned that she wore it on the way home in the car and then again when they went out.

I'm not particularly adept at wearing dressier scarves like the silk ones that often need to be tied or pinned but these are easier to wear and I like that they don't have fringe. I returned the black one and GH promptly issued a refund.

It's pretty and would be great for when you are not doing too much. Eating dinner or watching a movie it would work but any other activity I like something with sleeves.
