Any good home remedies for Shingles
Comments (9)You MUST see your doctor, if you haven't already. There are meds that can decrease the duration and chance of complications. If you can tolerate OTC pain meds, they can be a little helpful. My first thought went immediately to coconut oil, knowing how helpful it has been for me in healing cuts and burns and other skin issues. It has anti- bacterial and anti-viral properties. Lo and behold, it is listed as a remedy for shingles. I just did some reading on it. You can find organic coconut oil at a health food store.....it is a solid at room temperature and will come in a jar. I'll be sending thoughts of strength your way....please see your doctor. My eldest brother called all of us siblings after he came down with shingles. His mission was to MAKE us promise to get vaccinated as soon as possible. He also said that it was the worst pain that he's ever experienced....See MoreShingles Vaccine?
Comments (26)azzalea- I talked this over with my family physician of 20 years and he got the vaccine and I trusted his advice to get it myself. You are doing yourself a disservice by reading anecdotal reports about this on the Internet, getting concerned, and trying to form conclusions from piecemeal info. In your first post you said: "how often do we hear 5-10-15 years down the road, "Well, we thought it was safe at the time, but we're finding...." Well I'm trying to think when in my lifetime I've ever heard this said about a vaccine that had been approved for widespread use on the population, and I can't come up with one instance. No vaccine is 100% effective, and no vaccine doesn't produce some occasional side effect, but I think your numbers about people having reactions are distorting your view. The potential side effects -- redness, pain, swelling, itching, warmth, or a rash at the site of the injection -- are very mild compared to what can happen if you get it. In my case, I had no reaction of any kind. I have had those side effects from my annual flu shot, but it doesn't make me stop getting it though. Sadly, our society has become suspicious of medicine, and vaccinations in particular, and disease rates for preventable diseases are climbing. All the paranoia about vaccinations causing autism -- which have been thoroughly debunked -- has led parents to hold off on vaccinations...with the result that many children are dying from things such as whooping cough. The Internet is a wonderful source of information, and also a horrible one, because everyone, qualified or not, has a soapbox. If you want to research shingles vaccine further, get your info from reliable web sites, like Mayo Clinic and the Centers for Disease Control. It's your choice whether to get the vaccine. The only thing I can say is that if you opt out, and later contract shingles, you're going to be kicking yourself. I've had friends get it and it lasted for many painful months, and left one of them with permanent damage....See MoreI have shingles
Comments (36)((Audrey)) I can't believe how many young people here have had shingles. My friends brother had them and I remember he said they were so painful. I can't remember if he had chicken pox or not, but I know it's in that family. A different friend takes L-Lysine because she gets cold sores all the time. I had a BAD reaction to strep throat around Easter and broke out in a rash literally from head to toe! It was horrible, and they only itched real bad (and made me feel like a Leper). My immune system has definitely declined since I've stayed home with my DD. Now I'm too scared to get really stressed! Do you remember David Letterman had them a few years back and had to have friends guest host for a few weeks? I hope you are feeling better ASAP!!...See MoreUpdate on ongoing shingles vaccine saga . . .
Comments (25)To be clear, my issue is not about finding a place to get the shingles shot, nor is it about getting and affording either flu or pneumonia shots. Hubs can get flu and pneumonia free through Medicare. He has the 121 page Medicare coverage booklet, along with supplemental insurance that he purchased from the company his son work for. I have suggested he talk to an insurance broker as he is now shopping around for better supplemental coverage. But honestly, i think better coverage will probably come with a higher price tag, so there ya go. My Dad has excellent supplemental coverage and is paying around 1K per month for it . . . no way around it, on the commercial market, when you are old, you are expensive to insure . . . As for the cost of the shingles shot, the health department quoted is $160 per shot, with a $30 discount per shot due to hubs prescription discount card. That's still $260 total. Thanks for the heads up about the insurance billing issues Sea Sea! Hard to say how this is going to play out. As I mentioned, my doctor was MIA all through September due to changing the location of her practice. So I don't know if she offers the shingles shot, but I doubt it. That's one of the reasons I have been searching for a new doctor, another was wanting one closer to home. I thought I had found one, but now that one up and quit. That PA issue worries me, as that was what was offered at the new practice I chose. The office seemed very well organized, but the actual doctor is only there two days a week, the rest of the time you see a PA or nurse practitioner. But my other doctor wasn't easy to get in to see either, so at this point it's kind of a toss up . . . I live in a poor rural area, few good local options. All our local hospitals are hanging by a thread as it is . . . The information on how my insurance will pay for the shingles shot comes directly from my insurance company. They sent me an e-mail response to my inquiry. They wrote that they would cover 100% but that if I went to a pharmacy I would have to pay and submit a reimbursement form. They didn't say that the pharmacy could bill them, so I don't know. I don't want to wait any longer. The repeal of the Affordable Health Care Act is actively ongoing, who knows how long these regulations that enforce insurance companies paying for preventative vaccinations will stand. They are tenuous at best. Seems like our postal service is also tenuous as far as the reimbursement paperwork too. Russian roulette seems like the new game in town for health care....See Moresocks
