What to do with 80s oak built-in bookcases

Hi all,

I love the look of this room, but hate the orange oak. Thinking of several options:

1) Paint all of the bookshelves/base/doorjambs white/offwhite, leave the stain on the mantle, leave the ceiling alone (or paint the T&G white), lose the chair rail. My concern about this choice is it will lose the rustic feel.

2) Try to make everything more brown, less orange, using gel stain.

3) Leave it alone, but paint the back of the bookcase offwhite/wall color so the shelves aren't so dark (items on the shelves look lost at night)

4) Do nothing at all, let the next owner worry about it.

Thoughts?

BTW it looks more orange than the photo shows.
