30" range died, overwhelmed and need help finding replacement
Comments (65)AniaWin, That's why I love GW. You can talk to people that actually have an use the appliances you're considering. I'm personally pretty sensitive to noise. For example, our Kenmore induction range has no fan to cool the oven after use. The induction cooktop fan only turns on when using high heat, and is quiet / unobtrusive enough that I only notice it when it turns on and quickly forget about it. You'd never hear it over a range hood (and if you do, tell me who made your range hood). The convection fan in the oven, on the other hand, is relatively loud and annoying. It turns on when pre-heating the oven and when using any convection settings, and is one of my main dislikes about our range. It doesn't keep me from using the convection settings, but I will turn the oven on using regular Bake so that I don't have to hear the fan once the oven's pre-heated while I finish my prep work, and switch the oven over to Convection Bake once everything's done and ready to go in. I am, admittedly, sensitive to noise. For example, I switched all our bathroom fans out for the quietest I could find, and while they no longer bother me they're still not quiet enough for my tastes....See MoreGE Cafe Free Standing Electric Range - do you like it?
Comments (3)We bought this range about 6 months ago. Overall I'm happy with it. I love the way it looks! One thing to watch for is the knobs. They used to be plastic, but now they are made of metal. They feel more substantial, but still are very "delicate". We broke one of the knobs off the first day we had it, by leaning over the stove! It was replaced within a week, so I guess that's good. I try to be very careful, but I bump up against them a lot when reaching up to the microwave or the cabinet above. Second problem we had was the temperature probe melted when we tried to remove it from the turkey. I used a hot pad to pull it out of the turkey, and the plastic or rubber part melted onto the hot pad and got deformed. The manual says not to use tongs to remove it, and to allow it to cool first, but how do you take the turkey out of the oven while it's "chained" to it with the probe? I haven't contacted GE yet to see if that'll get replaced, but I usually use a separate digital probe that I like better anyway. As for the vents in the back of the range, I haven't had any issues with them. I did wonder what would happen if anything boiled over, would it go down the vent? Hasn't happened to me yet, but with my luck.... Despite those issues, I still really like it!...See MoreIs this 3 'wide prong' receptacle usable for new range cord?
Comments (5)Non technical names are range receptacle and range cord. If you are getting a new cord, take the old one with you and make sure you're not in the dryer section. The Lowes in our area keeps the dryer cords with the dryers and the range cords half a mile away from the ranges in the electrical section. I asked why? and their expert opinion was, I dunno....See MoreDouble Wall Oven AND Built-in Convection Microwave
Comments (6)Search the archives. This question comes up regularly. In general, many people see the benefit of having more than one oven, but few people need three or more ovens. This is a little different, if you make some of these ovens have special features. In other words, your choice of a double walloven seems rather unusual. But having a steam oven and a microwave (or better a speedoven) is quite useful, if your budget allows you to do so. These usually all are 24" devices. That's fine, as it doesn't take up unnecessary large amount of real estate and as it pre-heats much faster. But depending on what you cook, you might still need a fullsize oven in your range. If you don't need it, then a range top is a better choice....See MoreL P
