Keep existing footboard , but replace headboard?

I’m trying to make some subtle updates to our master bedroom. I’d really like to swap out the headboard on our bed for a charcoal grey upholstered one like the one in the photo, but I’m concerned it won’t go with the footboard that I’d like to keep. Both the headboard and footboard are fairly structural for this bed, so swapping the headboard alone will take work on my husbands part. The other option would be to upholster the inset part of the headboard and footboard ourselves to make them match and to avoid swapping things out. Similar to the example, but we’d add tufting. I’d appreciate any thoughts or opinions on either. The bedding will be replaced too, waiting on my Pottery Barn order. Cat will stay.

Not a pro, so just voicing an opinion here. You said subtle changes, but the charcoal headboard seems like a big departure from the rest of your furniture. I wouldn't combine that headboard with your existing footboard and night stands. Nor would I upholster the two existing pieces, because my read is that the pine furniture is more rustic than tufted upholstery would call for.

Would you think about painting the furniture to get a new look?

That's an awesome looking headboard Mangomoon!! I absolutely love it. Yes put it in your gardens, it's going to look fantastic. Personally, I love the old country vintage look and wouldn't paint it. There are quite a few gardening mags out now that show pics of headboards in gardens and they look soooooooooo pretty. Check some of the mags out for ideas and flower designs. Sure hope you'll post pics of it when you have "planted" it in the ground and then "planted" your flowers. To keep it steady in the ground, either use concrete or when digging your hole and filling it back up, really pack the dirt and it should do alright. I just saw my neighbor's buddy who does fencing, just dig a few holes here and there along the fence on both sides between our yards (a huge stockade fence) and then he just really packed in more "good" dirt in the holes and that fence stood right up. I was pretty amazed how that's all he did and it fixed the leaning over problem. Have fun doing your garden project - remember, share, share, share those pics. Sal

I have one from Room & Board, purchased several years ago (I'll link to the one I have -- the headboard extends 27-28 inches from the top of the mattress, which is 1 mattress, not a mattress+boxspring, because this is a platform bed w/metal slats). I don't like a lot of throw pillows on the bed, but I do love my 2 Euro shams there that coordinate with my comforter, and those shams give me a little more cushioning in the back when I'm sitting up using my laptop or reading. Plus, if I thought I'd stain them with anything, they're a layer of protection. But quite honestly, I don't think that's ever been an issue. If you think there might be, you can always spray a fabric protector on it (all over on the upholstered parts, not just the headboard). I'd also be smart about which fabric you chose -- even touching the samples will tell you which need to be baby'd and which are tougher. By the way, I use a vacuum cleaner tool to "dust" the fabric when I need to, so a light cotton upholstery probably would be a bad choice. Here is a link that might be useful: R&B's Ella bed

I always go function before form, and if removing the footboard makes your room more usable, go for it! I think an upholstered headboard or maybe a vintage wood headboard painted white would work for you, or the other one you already have. Dee

The language of feng shui may sound a little woo-woo to those of us with a Western education and mindset, but from my limited reading about it, a lot of it seems firmly rooted into the psychology of how we relate to spaces and objects (real or perceived), sometimes rooted in a very primitive part of our brains. Like when my bed was oriented so my head was opposite the door. Or sleeping underneath an object or architectural feature that give the impression it could fall on you.

I agree a new bed for sure I can’t see that foot board working with the gray headboard at all.

Believe it or not, I actually painted the fabric portion of a headboard fairly within the past 5 years. I did you paint specifically for fabric. I applied several coats of several different colors of paint using a stencil brush and wound up with a really nice (if I say so myself) leather look. That might be a way for you to get the color you want without having to replace either the headboard, footboard or both. If you are interested, let me know and I will take a photo of it and post here. BTW, the paint job, like I said, is about 5 years old and it has held up wonderfully.

I'm definitely realizing that headboard won't work. Our furniture is of good quality and we live in a 1918 craftsman style bungalow so it goes because it actually has that Spanish mission type of look, the hinges and hardware add to that. i wouldn't be opposed to just swapping the bed out, but I'd have to find something that would go with the furniture. I started looking at new furniture online, but the Joanna Gaines style definitely dominates right now. I don't hate it, but I feel it's become somewhat overdone right now. Looking at this bed or something like it as a possible.

You might try searching "headboard" in Stories in the Houzz search field. There are quite a few stories linked with creative ideas. Maybe you'll see something there that you like and would work with your existing bed. Good luck!
