Trying to find out what my China cabinet is worth

Hi there, not sure if anyone can help me but I’m trying to downsize for a love to a much smaller place and would really like to know what I should ask for my China cabinet.

I know it was built in 1969 by a custom carpenter (my dad) and the bottom is solid walnut (and weighs a ton!).

There is small damage on the right side that wraps around to the front and a few chips on the corners from many moves.

Thank you for any advise. And don’t think me a crap daughter for selling my dad’s beautiful work, I’m keeping the roll top desk and cedar chest he built for me :)

It's "worth" in $$, what someone will pay....to you much much more!
You migth get $75 for it....but with the damage, maybe not.

It's a pretty piece, but they are not in high demand these days and the market is flooded with people trying to sell or even give theirs away. The only ones that are moving in my area are MCM. Yours almost has that look, but for the hardware. Does it include the kitty? lol, so funny!

Your dad was a skilled woodworker!

I see them advertised for huge prices but I think a more realistic price may be $40.00 to$80.00 , maybe you could consign it to a antique shop and get more, who knows.They are few and far between now just my opinion.

I have a grandfather clock for sale do not know what it is worth i have called all the dealers in my town and surrounding and i get the same answer hmm idk so no straight answers i know that it is over a 100 years old it is german and there are names on a metal tab on the inside of the door those names are zimmermann&bruckner then below that dresden 1 seestrasse 4 i do have pics that i can send i just need help so if you have any info please let me know thank you

Have you looked on eBay? I've seen many there from good makers, even Karges, for just a couple thousand (or even less). They're used, but often in excellent condition. Besides that, many of the good manufacturers still make big, fancy china cabinets. I know Century does, as well as Theodore Alexander, Ferguson Copeland, Henkel Harris, etc. Even if you're not seeing them in furniture stores, you can still see them on manufacturers' websites, and then either buy from someone like Lexington Furniture or get your local store to order it for you. I can't imagine a local store refusing to order a china cabinet for you, whether or not they think they're outdated. Here is a link that might be useful: Century Furniture

Hmmmmm. Don't really see a defined theme to the pics-- and there is nothing wrong w/ that. :) It's just giving me pause on what to suggest. I'll throw out a couple of ideas for you to think about. Looks like the wall on the left of the LR opening is not as wide as that on the right so forget about matching for scale. Let's try for similar colors. You could try holding up 2 of the large plates from your father in that space stacked one over the other. Does the gold in the plate compliment the print? If you like that effect, it would be easy to just hang 2 of those for now. You can always keep your eye out for something else that echoes those colors more. Something w/ more gilt on the rim or in the overall pattern? Something like a solid gold charger? Or find a couple somethings the same size/scale of the smaller print on the wall to the left of the cabinet and stack those in that space. Can't really see that print to tell what it is of. But by having 3 of those similar (but not having to match) would balance that side of the room, too.

If you do not find someone that wants it I would suggest donating it. Depending on your tax situation you might be able to deduct the value from your taxes.

You dad did lovely work. Unfortunately, its value only belongs to you. 1969 does not fall into mid-century, so there is no market there.

The base has potential. Changing the hardware, possibly painting it…would it work in a front entry, or set it up as a serving piece? If none of those options work, consider maifleur’s

suggestion. Your dad’s furniture finds a new home. Sweet.

You might market it better by selling the top and bottom sepaeratly.....and please don't paint the walnut!! If you can find a strip of walnut veneeer to repair the damage it will sell better.
