Paint Design Dilemma

Which white for walls and trim? SW

This is my foyer. Will add board and batten. Should it all be the same white? I’m looking at SW white duck for the walls and snowbound for the trim. I like the snowbound better. Should I just do all of it the same

railing= Java

spindles = black

stair treads = Java

floor = mocha oak

back of front door = tricorn black

walls= ???

trim= ???

An iron staircase is not the same as 1990 spindles on a stair. Basically? You want those to disappear. Especially with a new wall treatment.

It is not bullying to warn someone of a potential "outcome" and disappointment in result, when going back to white.......will be a not - so - fun nightmare.

Please do NOT paint the spindles black. Handrail? Back of door? Fine both in black. Consider even treads in black. Snowbound is fine for all the walls and trim. Change the sheen . Matte for walls, satin or semi gloss on trim.

A matte white really concerns me for trying to clean it. Why not black metal spindle?

PPG's Delicate White. I use Swatch Right paint-peel-and-stick decals for trim and moldings because they're a thin film and will conform to the details.

The SW base without tint is Extra White SW 7008. Some painters have an extra shot of white colorant shot into the can. I've seen it. I've measured it and I don't see a difference VISUALLY. However, some painters believe it helps with hide. Because Extra White may need more than two coats. If they want to do an extra shot of white and can keep it consistent can to can, I'm fine with that. Ben Moore's base without tint is White OC-151. It's very pretty too. I believe (don't quote me) High Reflective White is ALSO an untinted base color which is why it's only available in specific bases. I don't know for sure because I never use it. I read that Extra White looks best with cool colors and doesn't pair well with warm woods. 🙄 I specify Extra White a lot. This is a ridiculous statement.

Hi! Yes, I think Bona high traffic. Or maybe that was the sealer they used. I think they used Dura Seal. Just found this sample sheet in my kitchen draw. We used the middle sample. QC 11 Hope this helps! We put a matte finish on the floors. Very little shine to it. It’s great but note that if you go that route. You can’t really scoot things that would scratch across the wood. It removes the matte and you will see a sheen streak in the right lighting or angle. Just a heads up if you go that route. Not too big of a deal, if you know in advance. We pic up and slide anything a tad heavy. Pads for bar stools etc.. Best of luck! Lmk if you have any more questions 😊

You wait until the lighting is finished and IMO you use LED bulbs 4000K that makes choosing whites easier and also eliminates any yellow cast .

MAKE THAT A BUSY BUSY JAIL CELL. : ( !!! with black spindles.All it will do is conflict, and detract from board and batten. Which is TRIM. If it's TRIM....board and batten, whatever? It's not matte;. It's satin or semi. Flat/plain drywall is matte, or latex eggshell.

😉 Don't feel bullied. There's no right not wrong to this. Black spindles just break up the sight lines that's all. Which you choose depends upon the visual aesthetic you enjoy most.

Good grief. Pretty soon there will less and less help, or Houzz will have a safe space department. : ) Count me one of the "number," and forgive the jail reference, However....most likely will feel that way. ..........but try it. It's paint and LABOR. Nitty gritty annoying labor for spindle . At least I didn't lie.

I can appreciate the comment about it being busy. Which makes me reconsider the board and batten. I don’t see jail cell at all. I see a dramatic contrast of all the black against the white wall. I just though I needed some texture on the wall if it were going to be so much white in that foyer.

But over all, should it be two different whites for trim and walls or the same white just different sheens?

Trim & B&B the same sheen. The wall above the B&B can be flat or eggshell.

Certain brands of matte paint are harder to maintain than others. I find that BM matte is too flat -- almost chalky. Really beautiful but delicate as hell.

Sherwin Williams matte is not as flat as BM, but is still beautiful, doesn't mark so easily, and is easier to clean. Since that's the brand you're going for, matte will be fine. Get a sample and play with it if you're nervous.
