Between the devil and the deep blue sea

Meaning have little choice between two perils, it is nautical in origin. The devil in this case is not the evil one himself, but a heavy plank (gunwale) fastened to the side of a ship as a support for guns. It was difficult to access and, once you were there, a perilous place to be, but better than the deep blue sea.
