Kitchens Design Dilemma The Old House

Kitchen remodel-design advice needed!

Have a 1920s kitchen to remodel on a budget. Keeping the wall tile with adorable strawberry accents and doing new cabinets, countertops, appliances and flooring. Thinking of a built in desk under the glass-fronted built in wall cabinet. This is a rental home so durability is key. All recommendations welcomed! Thanks!

Also doing away with the wallpaper and light fixture so ideas welcomed!

You'll need to post a floor plan to get comprehensive advice. Personally I would be looking for a new location for the fridge.

So after following along and reading and reading all the good advice and then OP's responses I did myself wonder a couple times (with a few head slaps really????) - are you reading AND THINKING about the advice posted or just posting more "I am totally out of control help me right now" questions that seemed to not take into consideration any of the advice. It was more I have to have 10', I have to have it large, I have to have it.....HELP regardless of the solutions posted. I kind of started to wonder if you are a college student in design school trying to get someone to draw up a kicking design for your homework assignment and it was the 11th hour. But I am no design expert just a learner myself. If nothing else there are some good designs in this thread with lots of elements that many would enjoy (well maybe not the topiary IN the kitchen). Oh wait a minute - THE TOPIARY IS THE SHRINE! You are all set!

damiarain and mama goose - thank you for those bold and beautiful layouts! You've found a graceful solution to a lot of my wishes. I'm on the fence about windows to the fridge/stove side of the house, because it faces our driveway and the neighbor's (not so attractive) yard and house. But the natural light would be wonderful! Great food for thought, thank you again. I'll have to check the space to see if there's room for dining table in kitchen. What's that great layout software you're using? rantontoo - We don't absolutely need two spaces to eat, and I had thought about shifting that door as you describe -- it would be between kitchen and DR. That way the traffic lane wouldn't go through the kitchen. I just couldn't figure out a good way to do that. Unfinished crawl space is underneath the whole main level where kitchen, etc. are.

No one can help you plan the space without measurements of all walls, doors, windows, appliance locations, etc. and your budget. I second the advice to live with it for a while. It will help establish your priorities for the new space, other than to get new cabinets and countertops.

Good question...That space is actually not that big in real life. We'll likely put the 2 chairs with a table in between that we have in the sunroom now. We may end up with a moveable island in the "butler's pantry" -- agree, it's more of an extended kitchen space. But we can reuse the same cabinets so it will be low cost and extra storage since we'll have less in the main kitchen area. Moving the bathroom was deemed to be more than $10k, and creates a lot more complexity in the project. I am intrigued by that idea, but I think that will actually make the house feel smaller since that will create more of a closed off hallway from our utility room.

Unfortunately don't have the budget to change the floorplan/move cabinets, sink or appliances. Looking for advice on cabinet type/color, countertop material/color, flooring material/color, paint color. THANKS!

Most people wouldn't use a desk in the kitchen, so I would do a counter top with a beverage station or use it as the place for a microwave oven. Go retro on the cabinets to compliment the tile, maybe in a cream color, walls to match cabinets. Counters would look good in butcher block or a retro looking laminate.

You might be surprised at the miracles the pros here can work with complete information. If you are putting in new cabinets you may be able to shuffle appliances around without any added expense.

As far as materials are concerned you will want to stick with the retro look if you are keeping the tile. I hope you are planning to have the tiles thoroughly cleaned and re-grouted. Other suggestions would depend on budget and square footage.
