Comments (7)Cape cod style is original to the coast of New England. Traditionally the interior was coastal style. But the style has been built all over. There was tons of cape cods built after WWll in our area and we are no where even close to a ocean. Decorating the interior with sea shells, ship lap, etc would look silly in our area. It was just an economical solid home to build for a family. Just smaller closed off rooms with narrow baseboards, wood doors and sometimes a fireplace in the living room. They are noted for smaller window so the interior lacks light. I would lighten up the interior as much as possible. I also do not like painting woodwork, but cape cods are not noted for exceptional woodworking. Except for the outside style of a cape cod, the inside is anything goes since there is really no interior style. That is why yours had the 70s interior, because it was built in the 70s....See MoreProper windows for a 1940s cape cod
Comments (13)Hallett & Co., I love the wooden windows (one of the reasons we bought the house) and spent a long time researching (and agonizing over) the options. There's a number of factors in our decision to replace the windows, but the biggest is lead (a devisive topic on houzz, I know). All our windows tested positive for lead, and our kids had elevated levels as well. The windows are in sorry shape, so another coat of paint isn't going to cut it, and we currently can't open any windows in our house. If we didn't have young children, we would probably restore the windows piecemeal as we could afford it, but we don't have the luxury of time here, or the budget to do them all in one go. It was a difficult decision, but for us, in our current situation, the only option....See MoreCape Cod house window size dilemma
Comments (35)Can we assume those are basement stairs you enter by the back door? You might steal some of the head space at the east end of those so you could put an oven/micro tower there recessed just a bit so it doesn't close off that end of the kitchen. Then you can move the fridge to the right by the window and put a gas cooktop and hood right of the dish washer. I would do a straight run of lower cabinets on the wall with drawers. One set left of the sink, doors under the sink, w/d, then cooktop with drawers underneath, then a pullout utensil cabinet, and another set of drawers next to the fridge which will have shifted into the dining area. The wall of pantry from the back entry to the oven/micro tower will complete the south side of your drawing. If you prefer a range, then you'd just lose the drawer storage but could make it up by extending the 12" pantry further into the dining space. Drawers under gas cooktop Utensil pullout A variation on these would extend all along the south wall or could stop to allow for a tower for an oven and micro and the dining end....See Moreeastautumn
