Has anyone used IKEA Karlby model countertops? What's your experience?
Comments (12)Great feedback, thank you. shaggydogs- I'm not sure about that 1.5" thick issue. I know they released their new "SEKTION" kitchen line and that's what I ordered. I noticed during my online building process that the sink base cabinets are now different compared to the old AKURUM models. Maybe they have some adjustments built into the new base cabinets for this difference? I'll place a call to IKEA and find out. milworkman - As for the particle board issue, most laminates are bonded to particle board and when treated well they survive quite awhile. My grandmother has a laminate countertop that's 20 years old and still going strong. But, you're right about the 45 cuts, it's pretty much impossible to do that and keep it sealed. I could just join them together without 45's, but they have beveled edges and I've never been a fan of joining two perpendicular bevels together like that. It just collects debris and bacteria as well as looking "half assed" in terms of build quality in my opinion. So, it seems I may have to give in and return these tops when some solid oak slabs become available ( available stock on these tops in Ottawa Ontario is rarer than a unicorn some years!)....See MoreHas anyone used the Torhamn cabinet fronts from Ikea?
Comments (9)I have seen them in person, but at the time I was paying more attention to the function of the cabinets and their interior fittings. I agree that the chicken wire look of the glass cabinets is a bit unattractive, but I can see one benefit is that it makes it easier to arrange the shelves -- you don't have to match the shelves to the glass rails. The doors themselves do seem well made....I wonder if painting them would be possible, and maybe cheaper than buying something from Semihandmade ... It does seem a shame that there's not a plain wood shaker. Anyway, I'm familiar with the many companies offering fronts to Ikea cabinets, I was just interested in seeing real life pictures of THIS style. :) I put "Torhamn" in Instagram and came up with a handful of pictures from a couple. who have used that style in their kitchen renovation. It looks really nice! It works because they have very few uppers and their kitchen has beautiful light. The pattern doesn't seem overwhelming at all....See MoreHas anyone hacked Ikea 24" tall cabs for 24" oven?
Comments (12)We bought the high cabinet itself without the doors, just the outer box. We used drawers at the bottom, and used a shelf to form the surface to sit the coffee system on, and another shelf to create the top of the coffee system area. The whole cabinet had to be notched to fit around some structure (the landing of the stairs leading upstairs). At ikea you may need the assistance of one of the kitchen dept employees to put the order together for the cabinet without the typical fittings. To be honest our GC dealt with the ikea order part, but I do remember him saying that if you sit down with them in-store they can customize the order list so that you’re only getting the parts you want....See MoreHas anyone retrofitted a LeMans blind corner pullout in IKEA cabinet?
Comments (16)It's not attached to the door, and it swings, then pulls out. Of course Ikea doesn't actually say that, because it would be helpful, and they can't have their website encouraging people to buy things. Here's a Video, it's installation, but I have it set to once he's pulling it out. (Not the best install video, either- there is a hole so that it's on the bottom of the cabinet, he apparently just didn't see it, per another install video)....See Moreaok27502
