Coxey’s Army

Coxey’s Army was an army of jobless workers organized in 1894 to march on Washington to get the government to provide public-works employment for victims of the financial panic and depression of 1893. It was led by an Ohioan named Jacob S. Coxey, self-styled “general,” and numbered about 500 marchers. Various other groups, inspired by this example, came from other parts of the county, so the final total may have considerably greater.

I do remember hearing the expression as being like "every one and his mother". I did not know the origin though, so thank you.

Wow. I did not know that. But, it doesn't jibe with the wikipedia version, which calls it a knock-out drug. Perhaps both could be true.

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.'

I knew someone who used to say of a large group of workmen, "They look like Coxey's army."
