Pig Latin

This has been a childhood diversion for many decades, though completely ignored by students of language and not even defined in most dictionaries. It consists simply of transposing the initial consonant of a word from the front to the end and adding the sound ay after it. Thus “John went home” becomes “Ohnjay entway omehay.” In The Lore and Language of School Children, it reports that pig Latin was common in England before World War I.
