Design Dilemma Remodeling Bathrooms

Powder room vanity size

I'd like to replace the pedestal sink in my powder room with a vanity. The powder room is a narrow rectangle. The width is 49". Should I get a 48" vanity and wedge it tightly in the space or go the next size down and have room on either size. Thank you!

I prefer to have space on either side as long as the space is big enough to comfortably clean there.

It looks like free standing furniture.

We have a tiny guest bath in our vacation home.

We did left offset for easier access to the sink. Otherwise, you pretty much are backing into the toilet.

I would use a vanity with room on each side, in case you need room for a wastebasket, toilet brush, etc. I don't know where your toilet is but I did a small vanity (24") in a guest bath that left enough room for wastebasket with standing toilet paper holder between the vanity and the toilet. I also was limited by existing plumbing; this was a gut job redo and moving the plumbing would have been costly (we're on a slab) so had to go with smaller vanity.

What were people thinking all those years with pedestal sinks, when there was enough room for a vanity with storage? Been there, had to deal with them in some places we've lived.

I have a pedestal sink in my powder room and am replacing it with a vanity for storage. Even just a place for extra toilet paper would be great. But it also had no deck space even for a bottle of hand soap. My toilet/sink wall is 5-2, and we debated whether to use a 24 or 30 inch vanity. We decided the 24 would be better since I did not want the vanity right up against the wall. We also decided on an 18" deep vanity to keep it as small as possible, so not to overwhelm the space. And we opted to replace our toilet with a wall mounted toilet to make it seem more roomy. It will only project 21" from the wall. Your room is a little bigger, If you center the toilet on 34" of wall space (30" is minimum code, 36" is ideal), you will have 31" for a vanity, so you could easily do a 30" vanity. And there are some that come in sizes like 26 or 28.

Bigger is better because of what is held below and because the space on the sides would be completely wasted otherwise. Make sure you measure your sink to get the depth of it. Of course, you could put the faucet off to the side as well if you get a wide vanity. Our vessel's faucet is off in the back "corner" (an oval sink). I did not want it in the middle because there was more room for it when it was offset. A round sink would be even more pronounced. I also like the look of it set off the center. OTOH, dh came home the day it was installed and hated it, yet does not seem to care now (a few months later). In fact, he never really mentioned it again. He was surprised/disappointed I chose that location yet usually tells me to do what I want, so he could not argue the point much since it was already done. It did not occur to him that there was any other choice but midpoint.

I like Artemis78 suggestion of a 30” vanity with 2” fillers on the sides. You can never have too much storage! I purchased Bertch USA vanities for my bathrooms, great quality with soft closing drawers. Check out their website. For the vanity tops I purchased remnant quartz pieces from a local stone yard. What about allocating 42inch to each the vanity and the toilet? That wouldn't feel too big for the vanity (especially if you get a floating vanity) and you would still gain extra storage space. Or if you decide to maximize the space, with a 48" vanity you can get a taller narrower mirror or a round mirror and add wall sconces on either side to balance out the heft of the cabinet. A 36" vanity would be more affordable and would still look great though. I would nix the storage tower and opt for a larger vanity if you need the storage space. I think budget and storage needs will help you make the final decision.

Hi, I found a mirror I like that us 28” wide x 42” high. I also found sconces that are 4.5” wide. If I place my sconces 3” away from the mirror on both sides, then the sconces will extend about 1/2” beyond the width of the 42” vanity. Is that the correct sizing? The next size mirror down is 24” but I tend to like larger mirrors if the 28” mirror works. TIA!
