What size of vanity for my powder room?

I like update my powder room, change the pedestal sink to a vessel sink: a dark wood vanity with a white vessel sink.

This is what it looks like now. The space is 31"w X 24" D, the pedestal sink is 23" wide and 19.5" D. (That was a big dog on the floor, just in case you wonder:-))

I would like to replace the pedestal sink with a white vessel sink and faucet like this:

Of course, the mirror and other hardware will also be updated.

My question is what size of vanity should I use? Should I use a vanity that fill that space (31" wide) or should use a vanity about the size of the current sink (around 23" wide)?

I am enclosing a diagram of the powder room here to give you a sense of the dimension.

Assuming your walls are square (which is a very dangerous assumption) you should be able to get a 30" vanity standard, so no special orders necessary, and I think visually the space would appear larger if the vanity filled it like that.

But I would take the time to measure the width of the space in the back and in the front, so you don't have any ugly surprises, given that you are doing a close fit.

Hi ajsmama - I've been following your posts with interest because I'd like to do something similar, if I can find the right piece -- not easy. I've been looking for a while. Everything is either too shallow, too low, or too wide (for my small bathroom). Using a washstand will work out great, if you can solve the height problem. Have you considered adding legs to the vanity? They would have be rather plain to go with the style of the washstand. I saw some on Van Dykes that I think would go (stylistically speaking). I don't think it would be too difficult for a carpenter to make similar legs out of oak to match your washstand. As long as the size and tapering match the existing washstand legs and you can get a reasonable match for the stain and finish, the modifications would be nearly inconspicuous, and since the joints would be so low, I don't think that people would notice the joints even if the joint lines show. If you're planning to paint the washstand, it would be impossible to tell. The back legs wouldn't need to be tapered because they'd be totally hidden (and the back legs on your washstand are probably square anyway). If your carpenter uses dowel joints, they should be strong enough, since you won't have to move the washstand once it's installed. I just painted my boys bathroom. A lovely brownish tan color. I had 2 partial gallons of off white paint, mixed em together in a large bucket, put in 1/2 qt of a nice chocolate brown color...tried it and added a little more brown...walla---lovely color. I am tired of all that paint setting in my basement. I am gonna do the same thing with the living room, I have 1 more gallon of off white paint that I had to buy for my sons room, used 1" off the top. I am gonna add that to the rest of the bathroom paint and add the rest of the brown. We will see what I get! Paint costs soo much and the remains just sit in the basemtent so..I am on a tight budget and want to try. Can you do something like that? I will try to post a pic tomorrow of my color. Karen L

Is the vanity in an alcove? If so, mirror the entire alcove and have the glass company cut the mirror for mounted sconces on the mirror. You could also do this if there's no adjacent walls or one wall, and you may have to. You have 38" to fit a mirror and two sconces (countertop overhangs an inch or so). I would want at least 3" between the sconce shade and mirror and the sconce and the wall, so 3" + 3" + width of sconce. I have a 24" mirror over a 36" vanity, which is a fine size for the mirror, but that leaves only 7" for a sconce between the mirror and wall. If you used a smaller than 24" mirror, the sconces might be too close together. I read that 30" - 36" is the optimal spacing for sconces. I always draw this stuff up on graph paper to check spacing and proportions.

hello! i am having a design dilemma with thinking about my powder room. this is a room i wanted to have a little fun in, but don't want to look like i just threw super random things together. we are going to do a stainless steel vanity base and i am now searching for a faucet...am i going too far out there to think brass could look good? or should i stick to something like polished chrome/polished nickel? faucet will be wideset with cross handles (ceramic center Hot/Cold) . other room details: floor: 2x2 calacatta gold hexagon tile vanity top: colorado yule marble (white with very slight warm gray/brown veining...will be mostly white) walls: possibly reclaimed wood as an accent wall picture of vanity base below

Thank you sloyd and les917! How about depth? If I have a choice, should I do 24" deep to fill the whole space (31X24) or use a 19"-21" deep vanity to use up less space?(The current sink is 19.5" deep)

All depends how big in diameter the vessel is, and spacing for the spout? Some I looked at online for a 30" vanity, the depth was 20"

Bigger is better because of what is held below and because the space on the sides would be completely wasted otherwise.
Make sure you measure your sink to get the depth of it. Of course, you could put the faucet off to the side as well if you get a wide vanity. Our vessel's faucet is off in the back "corner" (an oval sink). I did not want it in the middle because there was more room for it when it was offset. A round sink would be even more pronounced. I also like the look of it set off the center.
OTOH, dh came home the day it was installed and hated it, yet does not seem to care now (a few months later). In fact, he never really mentioned it again. He was surprised/disappointed I chose that location yet usually tells me to do what I want, so he could not argue the point much since it was already done. It did not occur to him that there was any other choice but midpoint.

sloyd: I was thinking of 14-16" round vessel sink. I know online vanities are about the size you listed. Since the space is 24" deep, I am just wondering whether I should make vanity deeper than 19 or 20".

dianalo: I am with you when it comes to the placement of faucet. I always intent to put faucet on the back "corner". I never thought of oval vessel sink though, come to think of it, it can be very pretty. Why did you pick oval sink?

At the beginning, I just presumed the vanity is going to be 30-31" wide to fill the space. Then I mentioned it to DH, he said he always thought the width is going to be 20 some inches like the one I have now. After getting 3 votes for filling the width, there is no question we are going to fill the width now. Thank you all for your replies!
