I think the island is fine and I would STRONGLY urge you not to make the island multi-level. You have seating on one side of the island. If you make the island multi-level, reading a newspaper or magazine while eating will be awkward. Also, a multi-level island will make the kitchen feel smaller because it will break the horizontal flow. Plus, you will loose prep space. I think making the island multi-level would be a huge mistake that you would live to regret. I agree that the cabinets to the right of the sink that end in the wall are a little awkward. But on the other hand if you do anything else on that wall, you will loose the symmetry with the other side of the kitchen. There always trade-offs and I think you should leave those cabinets as is. Open shelving would not balance the cabinets on the other side. You can use the far right cabinet to store things that you rarely use. On the one side of the island where you have the two smaller drawers, I think it would look better if the top level was one larger drawer to match the drawers underneath. But then I have an obsession with the drawer and cabinet doors heights matching across cabinets. However, I realize that is not always possible. And, yes, your double ovens would ideally be closer to your cook-top, but they are fine where they are, I think. If I had to make a choice between having the ovens or the refrigerator next to the cook-top, I would definitely chose the refrigerator. You do not want your refrigerator to be far from the cook-top. Your kitchen is going to be terrific. You should not be losing sleep. You will work all the little things out quickly. Just don't make the island multi-level. That would really close in your kitchen visually. Comments (19)Can you post a floorplan (i.e. a 2-D, not 3-D, bird's-eye view) that shows not only the kitchen but also where the windows and doors are and what rooms the doors go to? That may give us some more ideas. What we can see from the pictures you posted is the kitchen itself, which is great for evaluating how it fits together, but we would have a better feel for the possibilities if we could see it in the context of what rooms are adjacent to it and where the doors and windows are. For instance, depending on how the adjacent spaces are, it might make more sense to shuffle things a little--for example, maybe the range could be on the wall where the fridge is currently shown, and the fridge should be where the range is (but closer to the wall, with maybe a 9" pullout to the right of it, and thus 21" between the left side of the fridge and the sink). That might be possible if the floorplan shows that you can widen that sort of cubby-space where the fridge currently is without hampering the floor plan or the flow of the adjacent rooms. Just taking down those walls that frame the cubby-space would add almost a foot to the available width, since walls are typically about 5.5" thick, and if you could add a little more by stealing space from beside it--for example, why is the doorway that the range faces so wide? Could you narrow it in order to put more counter there?--you might be able to put a range there with a decent amount of counter beside it. Then you would have prep space both beside the range AND beside the sink, so two people could more easily work in there. That's just one random possibility that I mention because I agree with Aloha and Marcolo that 15" of prep space between range and sink is not very useful, although you do indeed need counter on both sides of the range. One option is to have a smaller sink. Another may be the random possibility mentioned above. Another may be leaving the range on that wall, but scooching it six inches to the right so there are 9" of counter to the right of it with a 9-inch pullout below, and 21" to the left. The 9" of counter would exist not as work space, obviously, but to accommodate pan handles and to set spices and utensils on when cooking, and perhaps your knife rack or a jar of utensils could also live there. That way you would have 21" inches of workspace between the left side of the range and the sink--that's a much more reasonable amount of space to work in, and it could even be wider than 21" if you made the sink a little smaller or were willing to place the sink a bit off-center. Speaking of sinks, is that a double-bowl sink in your current plan? Have you considered a single-bowl? Double bowls make total sense if you wash your dishes by hand, but if you have a dishwasher and don't need a double bowl, then single bowls have the huge advantage of being able to fit (and thus hide!) dirty pans that you need to soak. Also, if you did want to scooch the range to the right and shrink the sink by 3" or whatever to create a good workspace, going to a single-bowl might give you more options. (As sinks get less wide, there are fewer double-bowls and more single-bowls available.) BTW, how wide is the sink in your current plan?...See MoreNeed Some Kitchen Layout Feedback Please

I may have to push the sink over a bit to make the dishwasher fit. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Comments (16)KA mixer in an upper cabinet? I don't know about you, but mine is much too heavy to be an upper cabinet! You really shouldn't put heavy items in an upper cabinet -- if they slip out of your hands, it can be dangerous if they fall on you. I would do one of the following: Leave it on the counter (maybe get a cover for it when it's not in use to "hide" it and keep dust out) Store it inside an appliance garage Store it on a pantry shelf about waist-high. You could also have one 18" base cabinet with a mixer lift in it. It'll take up most of the cabinet, but if you don't like it on the counter and don't want it in a pantry or similar, then that may be your best bet. . The sink-DW-trash location has nothing to do with whether you rinse your dishes, it has to do with being in the way of someone trying to prep. If you're prepping on top of a DW, no one else can get to the DW to load/unload or add something/take something out. It's also not pleasant prepping over a running DW (heat and steam). Unless....are you referring to scraping and then loading the DW? If so, then I understand what you're saying with regards to DW & sink (no need for the sink). The trash, though, is best located in the Prep Zone since most trash/recyclables are generated during prepping and cooking. Ideally, it should be in the Prep Zone but near the Cooking & Cleanup Zones. If you put the DW on the non-range side and the trash pullout next to the sink b/w the range and sink, then you've accomplished the ideal!...See Morehunt597
