I have been told that you buy a two filter system: one for sediment and the other for chlorine, etc. They are installed at the point of entrance where public water comes into the house. In my case, the filters will go under the house but in an accessible area (although I can't imagine what is easily accessible under the house). My partner and plumber will set it up. The filters are around $250-300 (total I believe) and have to be replaced once every 6 mos or so. However, my partner seems to feel that once every nine months is more than adequate. He will buy the filters through a company that does the filtration systems for vineyards, but I don't know the name or location of the company. If you want, I can find out. He's probably dealt with them in the past for our well (on our other house in the country). As if water isn't expensive enough, now we've got to pay for ongoing filtration systems.

Take a look at the Franke Little Butler system, model DW-100 cost $200.00 - $250.00 comes with a small filtration system, Model LB-1000 which is instant hot water dispenser which would cost about $300.00 - $400.00 or LB-2000 which is Filtered water and Instant hot water dispensing out of the same spout cost $400.00 - $500.00 for a complete set. Filters last 6 to 12 months I guess depending on how often you use it and the quality of the water going into the filter, filter cost about $75.00 to replace. We have had great response so far, looks like the filtration system reduces Chlorine, Lead and other heavy Metals, bacteria, protozoan cysts, reduces sub-micron asbestos fibers also reduces foul taste and odors but leaves essential minerals intact. If there is a room issue you can even consider getting a faucet with a 3rd control knob which would dispense filtered water only when you need it this way you donÂt use up the filter each time you run water to wash dishes . Check out your local extension service for labs in your area that conduct drinking water testing. They can also give you insight as to pollutants of concern that you may want to add onto a standard drinking water test. As long as they are accredited, online labs should be fine. In fact, often times local labs will mail out their samples to other labs if they do not conduct a particular test onsite. No need to test for 100 pollutant parameters. Sticking to the standard tests, plus a few extra parameters you're concerned about, will be a heck of a lot cheaper than a larger-scale analysis--especially if it's treated municipal water.
