What is the purpose of this room? Adult conversation? Playroom? Multi purpose? Please have an overall plan before going forward. Getting bits and pieces of items without a cohesive look will get you just that - a room that looks like it's bits and pieces. First order of business is to determine your decor style. Allow at least a half an hour for this. Put in top search box one style at a time. First try casual. Then try contemporary. Then try transitional. Then try eclectic. Note what you like and don't like. Yes, contrast is good. Regarding your couch and rug being the same color - you can always put a contrasting color rug peeking out from under the couch on the diagonal to create contrast. Please contact us again once you have determined your style. Eclectic is fine, but the pieces need to be classic (not trendy), and a common theme needs to be determined - such as color, texture, etc. Your current furniture is a collection of all sorts of different design styles.

Congrats on the sofa purchase.

There is no problem that the sofa matches the rug.

Please do not buy a solid grey rug, that will not look good at all.

The white and pastel striped rug doesn't really match either and it will be filthy in two days if you have children.

Please select art that you like for that room. And not juvenile art please, it is not the playroom, Once you get the art you like, that will inform the colors of the rug.

If you want an area rug on top of the wall to wall carpeting, get anything from Ruggables, their rugs are washable.

I suggest getting the art first, because with children, the rug will get trashed where as the art won't.

Get throw pillows in interesting textures in colors that you like that complement the art.

Also get a beautiful textured throw.

The coffee table is fine, although you might think about getting a larger square coffee table so you and the children can play games on it. Or get these round ones, and get a game table for another part of the room.

I will check out Ruggables. It would be nice to get a big coffee table however it might feel a bit cramped, I measured out the round one and it is like the max size I can get.

I guess I should have mentioned...this is our basement, it is a long(ish) narrow(ish) room that I need/want divided into 3 sections; gym, kid friendly / family living room , and a small play area. The main floor is used as a more formal seating area and I try to keep less toys up there, this basement is where the majority of toys and playing will be. We have lived in the house for about a year and I never got around to getting new furniture and decorating it until now.

I will have to do more research on design styles. I'm happy to hear that this color couch will be fine.
