That helps, Madison. I am not a hybridizer, but there are wonderful roses that will grow in Iowa. I started roses in St. Peter Minnesota, where I grew up. I started with HTs, but now after 33 years in z3 in Alaska growing every hardy rose I could find I've gone into hot area roses like Teas and chinas. I'm sure people will be able to pipe in and help you. If your husband gets assigned a parish I hope you love the area.

Seconding Flowers' recommendation of the David Austin roses, I live in pretty extreme climates and they do very well for me. So do my Griffith Buck roses. Some rose nurseries specialize in hardier roses for colder areas, such as High Country Roses in Denver. I have also found some pretty nice classic hybrid teas in the body bags at Walmart and Home Depot, but it pays to buy them pretty quickly after they are set out in the colder areas. I missed out on Double Delight for $5 last year thinking I would pick it up next time I was in town because they left the rack out in front of Home Depot and an ice storm froze all the roses to death. But if you only spend $5 it's not too heartbreaking if they don't make it through the winter, that's less than a pot of pansies.

And “LCMS“. I thought this was some millennial type expression. I had to look in Wikipedia:

Madison, I completely missed the part about your interest in hybridizing. I honestly don't know if any of the roses I recommended make hips. Of mine, the ones I've noticed that do are Mme Isaac Pereire, who has Austin type blooms on very large bush and Morden Sunrise, a variegated single yellow. I hope roseseek will see this thread. He can steer you to the roses you want for hybridizing.

I always recommend the gorgeous, fragrant, disease resistant, hardy, and elegant hybrid rugosa Therese Bugnet; especially if you'd like a larger, full and lush shrub.

She's practically invincible here in my southern Michigan Z5b.

Joey, that is great advice to look in the big box Garden Center stores for cheap roses! Last year, I snagged a Queen Elizabeth for like $6 and it did absolutely wonderful! I planted it at a place we’ve since moved from, so I was fine forking over a few bucks to see how one of them would do, and we know the landlord well, and he promised I could come and get a cutting from it :)

Rifis, I don’t feel like this is an appropriate place to have a theological discussion, but I would be more than happy to direct you to a pastor in your area if you have questions why the LCMS chooses to practice certain limitations on inter prayer with other religions. May pastor would love to talk to you and answer any tough questions that may be on your mind!
