Please help with furniture in living room

Good afternoon! I just finally cleaned out Christmas things and I'm just unhappy with the furniture in this room. We do have a large sectional that needs to stay, as well as the piece that holds the tv, but I just don't like what's on either side of the tv piece and I don't know what to do. I want it to be cozy, yet I don't like a lot of "stuff". The room is an odd shape (15x22) and opens to the dining area and kitchen. We also have a large fireplace taking up a lot of space. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated. *I'm not sure why, but my phone doesn't give the option to add picture in the post, but they are in the comments.

Your idea about the mantel is spot on ! I think your new rug is nice, but....(sorry), I feel like you dont need a rug in here or you need something lighter, smaller possibly even a free form like faux bear or even round. the space is so small the rug is closing you in. recliners will eat up a lot of space here........ you will have to forgo the coffee table I suspect. have you toyed with the idea of an ottoman instead, especially since if you are reclined you dont really face the tv so it might not be as awesome lol. You could do a reclining chair and sofa with an ottoman, might get more function out of that. Leather sofas really only have so many looks, so I would argee that gray is not really great I would lean toward beige if it was me. might I also toss out there the light bulb you have shining on the fireplace is a bit to daylight for my taste and also seems to be very bright! If you need more seating, you may be able to use a sectional without a back on the side portion, so your views are still open from the kitchen, similar to this: Another option would be to use a smaller round coffee table, and add one or two small bench type seats on the side of the sofa opposite the two chairs, or one longer one like this example: For the shoe area by the door, try to utilize all the vertical space that you can.

IMO if the TV is the focal point remove the FP it is not doing anything for the space and IMO a sofa and 2 chairs would be a better choice for furniture and honestly without measurements of the spaces around this it is hard to get a feel for this space. I think there is no room for a pool table since you require 5’ all around it. I find the easiest way to figure out what fits is to draw a to scale plan on graph paper then go to the drscription of the pieces ypua re planning and cut those out in the same scale adn marked the min. walkwys and paly with the pieces to see what works. in your case the pool table needs space sp start there if the pool table is a must. BTW there is no such thing as a sectional with 4 comfortable seats the only seats that are comfy are the ones with an armrest so 2 seats no matter how big the sectional is.

This is a toughie. Are you open to possibly reworking your layout. I don’t think this room is conducive to tv watching and having a separate area for toys. The location is great tho. The one thing I’d consider doing here is combining the play area with the tv area and couches. And the rest of the room should be more formal. What do you think of that?

I would take down the white "window" over the fireplace and put up some art work. Then get pillows for the sectional that are colors from the art. I am a plant lover so can suggest a pretty plant between the chair and the fireplace and a floor lamp between the chair and TV furniture,. Also how about some long narrow art (carved wood, wrought iron or mirrors, etc) on either side of your TV cabinet. Can't see the right side but something like that could work.

Painting the fireplace would do a lot for the room. Similar color to walls.

Yes, take down the "widow" it's too high for one and doesn't really do anything for the fireplace.

Move sofa back away from fireplace, it's look too close.

Too many pictures over the cabinet and too high.

Lean the farmhouse one on the mantle.

I think what is jarring me is the television cabinet. It is quite large, as large as the fireplace and the two being juxtaposed as they are seem to make the room heavy. (The sectional and smaller cabinet next to the large one also add to that heavy feeling.) Have you thought about removing the larger cabinet, perhaps placing the television on the smaller cabinet? I think some leggy furniture to replace the heavier pieces might work too.

Yes, it's even a bit of a tight walk way there now. Just a thought, move the sectional right back to the stair wall (you would have to relocate the cabinet. You would have to walk in front of the fireplace to get around the room. Would that work? Perhaps even putting the sofa table behind, (next to stairs). Maybe try a few different things and see how they work. BTW, I like the tv unit it goes with many items in your home.

I think you are well on your way, You have a lot that looks good. Get rid of the small cabinet next to the tv cabinet and all of the art hanging above it. Move the tv cabinet about six inches toward the doorway. That wall feels heavy the way it is.
