Tumbled stone -- not TOO tumbled (at wit's end)
Comments (0)We have been trying to find the right travertine for our bath for months. Honed & filled is too perfect and formal so we're looking for tumbled. Now, small tiles 6x6 and under, there's at least one company called Pietri Bersage that keeps the edges and corners fairly crisp. It looks like old stone. All other companies we've seen over-tumble theirs. Larger tiles apparently don't fit into tumbling machines and break, so everyone "fakes" the look by grinding the edges. Unfortunately they all (including Pietri Bersage) overdo it so the stones don't match their smaller stuff. Are we missing something? Do we really have to choose between stone that looks too stiff/cold (honed/filled) and Roman ruins?...See MoreAt wit's end with hot water baseboards-- please help!
Comments (20)Hello CNVH, Paul Meller from West Bloomfield, MI. (Just north of Detroit) I too have the base board/hot water heat. I have three heating zones (White Rogers zone valves) with one circulator motor (Taco brand.) When I bleed my system periodically (in the summer), I turn off the furnace, attach a garden hose to the drains (one drain is located beneath each zone valve) I manually open up one valve at a time (with the manual dial on the valve) and let it bleed. I do this to each of the zones. While bleeding each zone, I open up the pressure reducing valve so the water flows at full house pressure (60PSI). Before I close the drain, I put the pressure reducer valve back to normal. As you know, the system operates at 15 PSI. I repeat the process on all three zones. Then turn back on the furnace. Make sure your air vent on the furnace is not corroded shut. They are inexpensive to replace. It is important to periodically "flush" the system. If water gets old, it eventually gets corrosive. The valves, pump and lines begin to degrade.... which can cause leaks. Then some may have an enviornmentally safe "anti-freeze" added to the system. This is in case of power failure during a deep freeze. What a disaster should pipes freeze in a hot water system. Good reason to have a back-up generator. Consult a professional if you may need anti freeze. It has to be the "safe" kind of anti-freeze, so if it may by chance feed in your house supply.... you will be safe. Here's how to see if your system has a leak.... Just shut down the water feed to the system. Your system should hold the 15 PSI pressure on its own. You can do this during the summer, when the furnace is off. This will tell you if you have leaks, espeecially if you have pipes buried below cement on a lower level (like I have). The cement and ground touching the copper pipes will eventually cause a leak. I had leaks, so I had to "by-pass" some runs.... That's is another story, for another time. I installed my Peerless Cast Iron Bolier myself about 10 years ago... with the above by-pass. It works just fine, very silent. Hope this helps. Paul Mellerowicz...See MoreWits End?
Comments (6)I bought lots of glass gems from Wholesalers USA. Loved their selection and prices. Then I tried ordering mosaics and they screwed up my order twice. What annoyed me was that when they reshipped my order, they shipped it regular UPS again, so I had to wait a second week to get my stuff. Then it came and it was the wrong thing again. I wasn't going to wait another week. Unfortunately, they haven't gotten any of my business since. I've ordered everything from Mosaic Art Supply and Wits End. I thought it was so nice that Wits End sent free samples, but I confess, it makes me want to not ask for samples. (See how programmed we are to not expect something for nothing? LOL) Plus, they are almost twice as expensive as Mosaic Art Supply. But I was so impressed by the freebies that when I make the sea serpent, I'm going to be sure to get at least some of my tile from them. And, if you think they're a small enough operation where they could use their bags back, I will go ahead and put them in an envelope. That's the one thing about the internet: You don't always know if you're ordering from a big warehouse operation or a guy who has a side business in his garage. You know?...See MoreAt my wits end
Comments (7)My heart breaks for you because of all of the evil ex wife stories I have heard - yours rates right up there in the top 10. Worst of all, is that the same forces that were at work in your BF's marriage continue even after the divorce and probably always will because she's got him right where she wants him. Her ace in the hole is the children and it will be until the time they are old enough to make their own choices. If she is manipulating, it is because she had an easy target... not just now but throughout the marriage. Was his mother also a domineering, controlling person? Are you? There's a reason why people chose the ones they do. Is he willing to give up his children that he has known and loved for all these years for an unborn child he has never met and a woman that he loves that lives across the country? Is love of a woman enough to give up contact with his children? If he gives up contact with his children, will he resent you for it forever? Sorry that there are more questions than answers, but it is hard when you don't know the personalities of the people involved. There is nothing you can do. It is his decision to make what his choice will be. You can nag and lay on guilt, but do you want a marriage based on guilt. Not to mention the fact that you ARE still married to another man (separated is still married). You also have a decision to make. Could you raise another child alone if you had to? Would it be better to be married to this man and have his ex pulling his chains for the rest of your marriage (and yours in the process). Could you chose between your children and a man? Point is you each have a decision to make. No one can make it for you. Know yourself and make the right decision based on the long haul not on short term gratifications for yourself and your children and allow him to make his decisions for himself so that he could never bring it up later that he was coerced or forced into marriage. If both of your decisions coincide ... wow!! You'll have a basis for a solid future. You can make him aware of your feelings and what you would like to happen and then drop it and let him juggle it all around for himself. Good Luck. Hope it works out for the best ...whatever that is....See Morereigncrow
