I don’t understand where you are suggesting to place an island. Would this island replace an existing table and chairs? Do you have a dining room with table and chairs?

Hi thanks for the comment. We would replace the eating area as we have a large dining room next to the kitchen. The Island would be placed in the open area in the pictures- we would get rid of the peninsula and have an island instead of our kitchen. The pictures have all of the measurements- do you think it will be enough space, we are not looking for a large island, some thing long and thin.

An island not in the kitchen work zone is not useful for kitchen work. You’d be spending a lot of money to comply with adding electrical, permanently fastening it, for a small bit of cabinetry. For what is really a counter height dining area.

Skip all of that. Just buy a second hand tall dining table. That way you won’t feel as bad getting rid of it for being so uncomfortable.

I don't see the advantage of an island over a table in the eating area. Islands (and high tables) are uncomfortable to sit at for any length of time -- we oldsters abhor them. Honestly, an island will look odd. I fear you're over thinking this, Mark. Find a cool table and enjoy your beautiful new kitchen.

Think you can squeeze one in. I totally hear you and I prefer an island over a peninsula. It would have to be going the long way from the back of the kitchen. It’s something to consider but I’m not sure it’s the ideal for your space. Is there any flexibility to work with? Maybe move the door location? 🤭😬🤭

That's a very nice space as it is! It's nicely laid-out, nice-looking, and ergonomic. Positioning an island in the space which is intended for a small dining table would be a bit bizarre IMHO.

As for getting rid of the peninsula, strikes me that it would be costly, provide no benefits, and actually present several problems. It now offers quite a chunk of extra counterspace (can one ever have too much?) and 3 deep drawers. Pots and pans or whatever they actually house, do you really want to walk to the other side of this space to get them?

Plus, the end of the run of cabinets as they are currently has drawers on the eating-area side. That means if you were to get rid of the peninsula those would have to be re-configured to the front. If that could be done without damage to the countertop and you have a budget to do that, why not I suppose, but to gain what?

Personally I like the eating area in front of the lovely big window and having those drawers there to hold napkins, placemats, etc., is just right.

Islands are a bit of a fad, I think. They don't necessarily add to a space, either functionally or aesthetically.

You don't have room for an island at all in the kitchen itself.

24" for an aisle behind the island. The minimum it should be is 36" to squeeze by when someone is sitting at the island; you're a foot short. (44" is the minimum recommended, another 8" more)

Plus, that 42" aisle is the minimum for only one person working on the aisle, not for more than one. Are you a one-person household? I assume not since you say "we". For two or more people, the minimum work aisle is 48".

The island would not be able to have standard cabinets. You need 15" overhang + 1" for decorative door/end panel on the back of the cabinets + 1.5" counter overhang in the front of the island...that leaves you with cabinets no more than 9.5" deep.

It would also mean no appliances on the right wall, so the refrigerator will need to be moved to either the sink wall or the top wall.

The peninsula layout is much better than the island idea. In fact, anyone telling you an island will work either doesn't understand kitchen design at all or is lying to you. I know you don't want to hear that. Islands are all the rage right now, but not all Kitchens can support an island.

Can you remove the right wall completely? That's the only way you'll fit an island. You need to add at least another 26" to the width of the Kitchen and move the refrigerator to the top or left wall. More if you want standard cabinets in the island.

The OP doesn't want to put the island in the kitchen--he wants to put it in the breakfast area. I agree with Celadon this time--an island is first a work space, with an option for seating, and that's too far from the kitchen to be useful. If you want counter-height seating, get a pub table.
