Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

help with master bath vanity lighting

Hello all,

We are abuilding a new home in Florida. Our master bath vanity length is 96". There are short walls at the end. I'm attaching pictures. We had electrical walk through yesterday. The electrician said that we cannot have overhead vanity lights ( as we had originally planned) due to the presence of transom window above. She said it would not look good. She suggested side sconces.

After doing some research I am concerned that sconce lights may not be possible either as the individual vanity length is 36" and there is wall on both ends. There are already 2 recess lights over each sink. There are 2 separate mirrors that will be custom framed at a later date.

I do not feel this is enough light.

Is it possible to put overhead vanity light for each sink between mirror and transom window? Will it look odd? The vanity light we had chosen were archie chrome 4 light facing down.

Can I put narrow sconce lights ( 4 total- 2 for each mirror)?

Please help with various lighting options to make it bright.

Put two rectangular framed mirrors centered on the sinks. Add three sconces in total: one in the center between the mirrors, one on the left side of the left sink, one on the right of the right sink.

Thank you Sabrina! I was thinking the same- to go with very narrow sconces. For 96" long vanity with 2 sinks (sink size 18x13), how wide should the mirror be?

Thanks for posting a pic just_julie, beautiful! They said I can't because the medicine cabinets would be in the way. They said side sconces are usually placed at 60 inches above the floor. But I guess I could place the sconces higher... Thanks pricklypearcactus, I'll have to look into that...I'll have to search some pics online... Everyone...having trouble downloading pics. To the left of the makeup vanity is a corner where the medicine cabinet is. I like the 2 lamps on the makeup vanity to provide light at eye level. But how do I get electricity to these lamps? Could I just put an outlet behind each lamp on the wall? But do I need to have a backsplash at the makeup vanity though?? Wasn't sure if it would look weird if there is a backplash at the sink vanity and not at the makeup vanity. I asked the electrician & contractor about mounting sconces in the mirror as pictured. Contractor said he would charge $$$ to cut the mirror so that option is out. Don't know what to do in addition to the 2 lamps. I REALLY don't like vanity lights above the mirrors...but recessed lighting casts shadows. What to do???

I'm having trouble picturing a tub with a vanity on each immediate side. However, a 2 or 3 bulb flush mount with white glass would work. You might also look at vanity lights with white or off white glass shades. Consider using both types of light fixtures on separate switches to provide maximum flexibility.

Do you have any photos of the space? I’m getting ready to update my master bath as well and have decided on an LED backlit mirror in addition to several can (recessed) LED lights for even more lighting. I’m big on makeup and want the best lighting as well. Not the prettiest but as far as my research goes the best. Go on Wayfair and search, there are quite a few with excellent reviews.

Well the sink cabinets on either side are 36" wide. The sconce mounting plates will likely be 5". So I don't think I'd go any wider than 30" for the mirrors to give the lighting some breathing room. But tape it out on the wall so you can make sure it works.

Thanks Sabrina. With 30 " wide mirror, there would be just 3 inches left between the mirror and the wall. Will I be able to find a sconce with that narrow plate?

If you center the mirror over the sink, there will be 15" on one side, and 15" on the other. 3" left plus your 1 1/2" spacer gives you 4 1/2". You're right, you don't want it right up against the corner, so a less wide mirror is better.

Alternatively, you could mirror the full wall under the window, and do cut-outs for the lights. Like this:
