Living room needs life!

We have removed book shelving in our living room and in the place put a large TV. We definitely need to breathe new life into this room and don't know where to start. We would love some thoughts and ideas to bring this room together! Photos are in comments.

I'm guessing your style is casual. See these ideas: https://www.houzz.com/photos/query/casual-family-room/nqrwns Note what you like and don't like. Put the ceiling lights on dimmers. Put a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. If you have any plans to paint the walls, you may want to look into a gray blue or a gray green. You have a lot of color in the art over the fireplace, but that's the only place I see color. You may want to consider putting a lot more color into this room, perhaps in a lot more wall art, pillows, throws, rugs, accessories, and lamp bases. I would put curtains up on the bay window to make it cozy (in the same color as the walls).

Keep in mind that the color will look different if it is sampled on a painted wall. You should be able to mix colors and have it color matched--although depending on the skill of the salesperson, the match may not be perfect. We have done colors at 50%--I think that also depends on the salesperson as to how they do it. For us, we had SW softer tan mixed at 50% and it was just lighter than the original shade. I had sooooo many paint samples up--I did large portions of the wall in the samples--but having the samples side by side and doing them on top of our existing yellow walls really affected how the color looked and made it hard to judge how the end result would look. I ended up picking my favorite and painting as much of the wall as the sample allowed to get the best idea of how it would look. The svelte sage and grassland were definitely way too gray in my house. If you do a search, there have been other posts on greens--I know it was helpful when I was trying pick a green. I think I even had a thread and someone suggested a nice Behr color or maybe a lowe's color--it didn't work in my space as I needed to coordinate it with a tan adjoining wall--but it was nice--I just can't remember the color.

I think you're going to have to give us much more info and maybe pictures of your space. What styles do you like: modern, traditional, transitional, contemporary, eclectic, etc.? What colors in your home, etc.? How will you use the room? TV watching or just visiting with friends, etc. Kids in your home? Budget? I have a 3 piece sectional with a slightly curved middle section that I love. No chaise attached. I like the curved/wedge piece because you can actually sit there, whereas some sectionals are just too deep in that area to sit on comfortably. Mine's like this but my room is not at all this traditional or formal.

Art! Add art to the walls. I agree with the comments above. (Except pulling the sofa away from the wall. I don’t think the room is big enough.). My first thought was how well the sofa fits in the space. Looks almost custom to the room. Do you have a small chair or ottoman you can put where the fan is next to the tv stand? Id pull the rug out to cover the whole floor unless you hate the idea of the rug under foot on a travel route. It’s fine where it is but would look better pulled out. Post pictures when youve made some of the changes. Nice use of a small space.

I would use the den as TV area with TV between the built-in bookcases. Then do a back-to-back arrangement with two sofas (they don't have to match) and a rolling sofa table between them. The one in the den would be the guest bed. When you have guests, simply roll the sofa table under a window and close the sliding door. As an office, place a desk facing the window if you need good light for online conferences, or put it on the wall if you don't do that. A rolling desk chair can move out of the way for the sofa to be opened. In the living room side, use a round dining table in the corner right of the fireplace. A coffee table 12-18" from the sofa and perhaps a pair of small scale upholstered armchairs in an "L" with the sofa, their backs to the window. Art, not TV, above the mantel.

1) Console under the TV, at least 30% bigger than the TV.

2) echo the colors from your painting elsewhere in the room -- maybe recover some of the white striped pillows, etc. A rug with some color or pattern might do better than the plain tan too.

I would start by pulling the chair out of the corner a bit and also pull the sofa forward, out of the bay area. As it is now, all the furniture looks smooshed against the walls. Just a few inches off the perimeter wolid make a big difference.

YOu need a caibinet under the TV and the TV needs to be lowered so that the center of the screen is at eye level when you are seated. , so a low cabinet and as mentioned wider than the TV . Then add color with a rug or pillows .
