Forget glazed cabinets and if 1/4 sawn natural is the look you want then get that for sure it makes no sense to choose an expensive wood and then hide what it is. I do however need to see your design and the other cabinets . Are you working with an actual KD or cabinet sales person there is a huge difference . Waht is your counter going to be since that will also need to be on the island. Also what is your flooring these all need to work together.

And when it comes to samples, they are more suggestions than set in stone, especially with wood that grows on trees. The last thing we need here is another poster whining as to how the installed product doesn't match the sample. It's a hint, a clue, nothing more.

I've stolen customer's sink color samples after they raved about how nice the sink looked of course. The last thing I need is someone pulling a sample out of a drawer in a month and holding it next to an installed sink. It looks fine.

Not sure I understand - if you want the look of quarter sawn white oak with white glaze, why can’t you get a sample of that and move forward with that?

Joseph, thank you for your insight. This was merely a friendly post. I have plenty of professional resources. You may have misunderstood my comment. The wood sample I initially saw with my kitchen designer had a glaze on it. I was set on the lighter look (hence the glaze). The natural QS door that was sent as a door is more red than I had anticipated so I wasn’t sure if putting a glaze on an expensive wood would be worth it or if I should just stick with paint grade.

Val- the only glaze showplace offers is ivory so I am not sure how it will match up. It would be great to be able to see a finished project with this particular combination.

Patricia - thank you for your comment. The counters will be white quartz with minimal black veining. I am also having a hard time with flooring with such a unique grain wood. This has been part of my hesitation on going with the QS. We are going to do a wood look plank tile on the entire kitchen and downstairs.

You do make a good point with the character of the wood. I do love the grain so I want that to show, but I don’t love the red tone as shown in the door above. We are working with a kitchen designer.

The kitchen picture you posted looks nothing like the sample you have. Do you know what's in the picture? A glaze does not necessarily change the color of the door. It depends on how it's applied. I recommend all my customers to pay for a full door sample in the style and finish they want when dealing with glazes - it truly is the only way you will know what you are getting.

Is that quarter sawn red oak or white oak? I think you'd be much happier with white oak in a natural finish. And that door does not look like quarter sawn except for the top and bottom stiles.

Debbi - I am unsure of the species of wood of the finished kitchen I posted. The smaller sample is actually the same wood except for the addition of the ivory glaze. Perhaps I will order a full door in the ivory glaze.

Debi - sorry if that was not clear - the smaller sample is the same wood as the full door sample in natural matte finish.

Got it. I think the small sample you posted is nice. If it is white oak, I would ask for a full door sample with the ivory glaze and see how it looks in your actual space, with the other cabinet door and floor sample. Btw, I’m not a pro, just what I would do if I was in your shoes.

Just echoing the advice to get a full sample door, and view it in your actual space. I was like you and wanted a very particular look in my white oak quartersawn kitchen (without paying extra for a custom stain) and used my existing dining furniture as inspiration. What looked right in the store did not look right at all in my home- I brought all the samples home and narrowed it down to this- I was surprised that the closest match was a stain/glaze combo from Candlelight Cabinetry. It certainly does not obscure the grain, it looked more enhanced than the natural sample.

June - I’d like to think that I can still have the natural qualities of QS in a lighter tone. Perhaps I used the term white wash incorrectly but I don’t want to “wash” out any of the qualities of QS, I want the lighter color with the distinct grain of QS.

The oak looks great. The sample had grooves where the white settles. Are you going with the raised panel? Is there anywhere the white glaze settles? I don’t personally care for the white look in the groove, but if you like it then no worries.

I do not, at all, think quartersawn oak works with wood look tile. Quartersawn oak is all about the love of wood. Wood look tile is all about the opposite. They don’t mix well, in my opinion.

We are doing a shaker style door. Pendelton by showplace and yes the panel would have a place where the glaze would settle.

I also thought the samples shown, Dark Grey and Blue Oasis, were very beautiful, close to a dark slate look, but I loved Volga Blue counters more.

Our KD at the Omega Cabinetry dealer told us that cerused natural QS white oak would be 50% MORE than what we were originally looking at. I am looking at perhaps using the Chinchilla stain as something close to cerused. Anybody familiar with Omega's stains? I originally thought I just wanted natural QS oak, but it looks much yellower than I like.

I don’t think it has to look yellow, but I have a sample of the omega qs oak and found it to be fairly yellow myself. My parents have custom qs oak and I don’t find it to be yellow at all. If that’s what you want, I’d keep looking. Look at more photos, look at other cabinet makers. See if you have other options.

Amanda, I am also debating over quartersawn white oak with an ivory glaze or the weathered accent on it in ivory. I am deciding between that and a natural hickory for a wood vent hood in a white kitchen. My brain hurts from all the thinking! My Showplace rep does not have sample with the ivory glaze. He only provided me with the natural sample. What did you decide and do you have pictures? Sorry if the answer to that is in the above comments and I missed it. Thank you! I am posting my inspirations. :)

Hickory is the wrong wood. A white glaze is the wrong finishing treatment. Cerused white oak is not hickory with a white glaze. Not even remotely close.

I did get say anything like what you just stated. I said I was deciding between a hickory wood vent or a white oak vent with a weathered accent glaze / glaze in ivory. I know the difference in the a hickory and white oak. I know the pics I posted are white oak.

Rich burton - those all look like great ideas. I had an issue with showplace not being able to match any of these wood looks that you posted above. It seems like I would have had to either decide on the QS with an ivory glaze (which IMO) wouldn’t match up to the above pictures or go with my original choice which was an urbane bronze island with white perimeter. I would have chosen another wood (maple perhaps) if I would have wanted the light tones with a washed looked. Just as an FYI if you do a glaze it will sit in the creases depending on the look you want. Good luck !!

I did find a rift sawn white oak for my cabinets from Kitchen Craft. I don't know if they make a hood but I'm assuming they do. It might work for you. Also, I'm pretty sure I saw a nice rift sawn white oak from Conestoga sold through The Cabinet Joint online. Good Luck!
