Watering requirements for fruit tree on drip irrigation

I’m figuring out my drip irrigation on a new area of planted fruit trees and would like to know which trees could be watered at the same time on the same watering zone? Can I have all them on the same watering schedule? I have the following bare root trees coming in February. I know each tree could have different gph drip emitters to allow certain trees to have more or less water. Would they need more water when putting on fruit so maybe I would need an adjustable emitter?

after the first year of planting .. and perhaps a drink in the second year if there is drought .... no tree really needs constant watering .. unless you are in the desert ... which brings us to.. where are you .. big city name good enough ...

otherwise.. water a tree when it needs it .. not on a schedule .. and a well established tree really should be able to cope.. unless you are growing things way out of their normal range ...

may as well tell us about your soil type.. and how it perks.. etc ... so we can decide if that is an issue ...

and tell us how big the trees are ... size matters ....

do you plan on properly mulching the plants???

ps: i never had much luck with the 2..3..or 4 in one plants ... i wish you luck with those ...

pps: there is a good sized orchard a mile or so away from me.. and i am positive.. they do not water ... but for the grace of God ...

a second though..

i did have a row of 6 inch green giant arbs on drip.. on my sand ... and i watered about once a week for 8 hours ... and in drought the second year.. and never again ... i wanted the entire root mass of my tiny babes to have water in my sand.. and thats how long it took for the emitters to spread the water.. from one emitter to the next ...

my point being.. you have to understand your soil.. and its drainage ... to understand how to properly apply the water any given plant will need ...

you ought to perk your soil if you have never done so ... it will provide you a lot of info ...

I have used 2 gph bowsmith emmitters for years well about 20 years had 2 problem with roots pushing out emmitter for PE pipe this on 1800 pecan trees 25 peach trees 6000 blackberry plants never had one stop up there where 2 to most plants all under ground only used system for saving the plants from dry weather run system on timer had to replace timer once. I got injector for fertilizer vaccium type never like it if the line was running different pressure it pullup to much are to little amount even with 10 pound differial in psi. I never needed pressure regulator for emmitters in dry times the 2 gph emmitters would save the trees and crop ran pump 24 hours aday for about 2 months each stage 8 hours so that was 32 gallons water per plant on new planting i would put out 5 gallons a week until dry hot about 15 gallons week for first 2 years until roots spread out a drip system has been best for to use as system to save plant are crop not to make crop. If I fertilized in dry time I would put out in wet zone of emmitters. The people that I new that used the evaperation rate to water there trees blow over bad in high winds all roots be in small wet zone no support for tree. Most fruit trees die in three weeks with out water in sand soil. Always water because the pass weather never use a forecast to plan watering only use 1 inch rain are more to stop watering cycle. Each morning when get up think of plants water needs you do right thing. If call united irrigation talk to Vance are Bob in Quitman Georgia Vance is water engineer change over to rainbird pe tubing and bowsmith emmitter 2 gph you can bury all this type system as you like the pe tubing take sunlight for 20 years are more and you can add emmitters as needed. You can use 1 gph emmitters on youg trees and 2 gph on older larger trees in 8 hours 1 gallon give 8 gallons water 2 2gph give 32 in 8 hours. I like system that can add more emmitters to in later years line with fixed emmitters is ok on older trees if good one a lot drip tape and emmitter line stop up bad even with good filter system things over time get by filter system that self cleaning works best for me watching those pressure differences before and after filter is pain pressure regulator are required on trip tape any above ground pvc get algee in it so paint it black color to block out sun light.

I didn't want to answer your question because I know nothing about how drip systems affect the volume required, but I do know that a lot depends on weather conditions- humidity and wind, the length of days at the time, and soil conditions(the soil resevoir is usually based on texture but steepness, hardpans and outcrops can matter even more). If the soil allows a lot of water to absorb rapidly, you'll get a lot more bang for the buck from heavy rains and need less water in between. If an area is sheltered from winds a lot less evaporation occurs. Some soils block easy absorption of water as well, for complicated reasons not pertaining to texture. Point is, there is no recipe that works for all conditions and you are well served to get your hands in the soil to determine moisture level- or use a moisture meter- at least until you get a handle on your specific conditions.

I grow my potted citrus (19 varieties) with open hydroponics and yes, drip or micro-emitter irrigation can be very effective. That said, you've got to be laser focused on your trees because automated irrigation is also a very good method to kill your citrus deader than a hammer. You've got to re-evaluate everything...container, potting media, root-stock, nutrition... I'm near Panama Beach Florida my soil perks 2.5" per hour sandy loam so it's got a nice topsoil for 12 in with a clay and sand type below. The trees are bare root 2-year-olds. I planned on using plastic mulch around each tree 3 ft diameter with drip irrigation underneath the mulch. I figured I would put adjustable emitters around each tree that way I could adjust more or less for each tree.

good ... your knowledge level is beyond just throwing water at them ...

i have no experience in FL hort ... so i am just going to leave you with one more thought ... maybe 2.. lol ... coffee buzz.. sometimes i cant stop myself .. lol ...

you put down your irrigation ... and run it on your best estimate of what they need ... and then you use a hand trowel or tablespoon to dig small holes.. a few inches deep .. and FIND OUT how water is moving thru your soil ... and adjust accordingly ...

no one can really give you definitive answers about how this will all work.. in your soil.. in your climate .. in your yard ... so you just have to find out ... that was how i found out how long it took for the water to spread thru my sand between the GGs i mentioned above ...

ok.. i will add one other idea ... citrus and fruit is BIG in FL ... so i bet your local extension or Ag office ought to have a lot of info available .. find it and use it ... i will start you off at the links below ...
