My doors don't hit each other, I was just trying to say that rarely do you ever have both open the same time. My shower door does swing open enough to touch the vanity knob and the shower door installer put a little clear rubber dot on the knob "just in case" but no one actually opens it up that far. Really there is an easy solution and that is to go with bipass or sliding glass doors. There are new kinds that have a really fancy rail system at the top and no track at the bottom but they are pricey. We also looked at one that has 3 sliding panels so you could open it up really wide that was nice looking. Instead of doing a swinging open door, you can always do the sliders.

We have a totally traditional house and have levers and they don't look modern at all. Funny story though. When DS was in college he came home one day and was trudging down the hall, as boys that age are apt to do, and caught the strap of his back pack on the lever handle of the linen closet. Because he was moving rather quickly, before he knew what was happening, it spun him around and slammed his face into the wall. When he called to tell me he was going to the eye doctor to replace the glasses that were just broken, he couldn't stop lauging. He's 35 now and we still laugh about it. That being said, I've caught the strap of my purse on DM's door knobs many times, so I think there are pros and cons for each. I did read somewhere that levers were better for the elderly and handicapped. Good luck!

I have another question. You can see that there is some existing framing around the top and sides. I had to remove this at the bottom to get the middle track out. Should I replace it at the bottom and keep it at the top or should I just remove it all and replace it with something like a 2x2 since I need to close in the opening all around? It's currently two thin pieces of pine that was used to create a lip over the old doors.

There are people who choose stained doors with white trim throughout their house. It looks ok, but not a choice I would make. I also wouldn't start mixing stained and white doors in the same rooms, unless you are really good with design and being able to make it look intentional, and not like you ran out of white doors. Why does your husband want stained doors?
