I guess I have a problem with the arrangement as the door would cause interference. In that case is it possible to switch the plumbing for the shower and toilet ie relocating to opposite sides of the room it is a small bathroom only 5 by 10 feet, the bathroom will have to be gutted anyways.

A couple other options to consider:
1. Change the bathroom door so it swings into the hall/bedroom.
2. Make the bathroom door a pocket door.

Our shower door swings both ways, in and out. When you get into the bathroom to take a shower, you always close the bathroom door or it would be cold, right? And when you reach in to turn the water on for your shower, you would open the shower door out towards you so you don't get splashed with cold water but it wouldn't hit the bathroom door because that would already be closed (and your new whisper warm heater is already warming up.)

Then when you are getting out of the shower, you would open the door inward so all the drips fall into the shower, well at least we do. So I dont think that it will interfer with the bathroom door but if you could post a drawing, it would help us see if there are other options. I agree with the other posts if there is no way to get to a person who perhaps has fallen in the shower because the doors prevent them from opening up and saving them, you have to reconsider. I have one pocket door and it works well and is nice for a powder room so if you could do that, it would be a good solution.

Once you start moving plumbing, it can get really expensive. It seems like the toilet costs the most to move, then the shower drain but the plumbing inside the walls seems relatively easy if you are retiling and starting from the studs. I think the cost goes up dealing with under the floor, how easy your access it.

It is fairly easy to rehang the door so it opens the other way. We did that in our remodel. Pocket doors are great but they aren't cheap or easy to install after the fact.

I will not be able to swing the door out as it is at the top of the stairs and this would likely be more dangerous. The shower door could swing out freely as long as the bathroom door is closed but what I am not sure about is whether this is ok, from the previous response it would seem not.

I too have the same arrangement as fidoprincess. If the shower door is open out and the bathroom door is open, they touch. But this hardly ever happens because when you push the door to get out of the shower, the room door is closed. If someone came into the bathroom then, there would be interference. That's why I lock the door when using the shower. After all is cleaned up, we push the shower door in to finish drying and help prevent mold. When everything is very dry, we close the shower door and there is no interference except with the handle. The answer was a door stop for the bathroom door. Sounds complicated, but it really isn't and works well in my small 5x7 bath.

Here is what I did with the kids bath door. I didn't want the door to hit the tub every time you opened it.

It is an outside pocket door, or sliding door. You can find the hardware at www.johnsonhardware.com.

It is real easy to install and uses a regular door.

I also did this in our master where there was no door between the bedroom and bath.

Our master bath door swings into the step of the whirlpool so in order to stop it my DH affixed a door stop mechanism so the door will only swing open a certain amount and stop.

In the BH&G issue, Sept. 2008 issue, there was bathroom that had no shower door (since it was quite small). Instead, the homeowners built a partition shower wall and tiled it. The partition wall covers your body while you bathe and has your head exposed. Looks really nice (you can walk into it and have the partition wall cover your body while you bathe. If you were to go this route you wouldn't have to worry about a shower door and bath door swinging into each other. Can't find my mag, perhaps someone else has a partition wall and can share photos./Alex

My doors don't hit each other, I was just trying to say that rarely do you ever have both open the same time. My shower door does swing open enough to touch the vanity knob and the shower door installer put a little clear rubber dot on the knob "just in case" but no one actually opens it up that far.

Really there is an easy solution and that is to go with bipass or sliding glass doors. There are new kinds that have a really fancy rail system at the top and no track at the bottom but they are pricey. We also looked at one that has 3 sliding panels so you could open it up really wide that was nice looking. Instead of doing a swinging open door, you can always do the sliders.

We did an outside pocket door like lauraella did in our bathroom where it would have bumped with the shower door.
