Suggestion given when I had my first CPAP was to always use distilled water in any type of humidifier. Secondly clean it frequently even if you use distilled water. There are organisms that are in the air that love warm moist places.

Since your skin is dry suggestions given to me when I had that problem were to not bathe as often and use moisturizer after bathing on all parts that you can reach. Some products such as body lotions have small amounts of alcohol which can actually lead to dry skin. My doctor suggested that for people with dry skin bathing with only slightly warm water once or twice a week when not physically active was enough. Not really hot steaming water. Since I was over doing it I had to ease into the twice a week with what used to be called sponge baths in between or if desperate a shower with no cleanser just water.

I have always had a humidifier (from Walgreens) that used a filter. (in the bedroom at night.)

The one I used, the filter was like $12 and I thought it was rather expensive to change out every week, so I recently bought one that didn't require a filter.

I noticed that there as 4 or 5x's as much as that "white dust" mdln referred to in the bedroom! I'm going back to the one that requires a filter.

I'm thinking of getting one too. I checked Wirecutter to see what they recommend, and they also say to go for an evaporative type.

We have a Honeywell. You have to change the filters, I think at least monthly. It helps.

We use tap water though.

WE also have a gadget that monitors the humidity level.

Many years ago I had an ultrasonic one and for some reason, it caused me to cough all the time, so I got rid of it. I now have an evaporative type (honeywell) and so far, so good.

Can you put one on your furnace? (I think you just got a new furnace.)

We have flow-through humidifiers on both of our gas, forced air furnaces. No mold. When the ignighter starts the furnace, water flows onto the mesh media attached to the blower. When the furnace cycles off, any remaining water drains into floor drains in our basement. We replace the media evey year or two, as needed. (We don't have hard water.) We've had wonderful humidity with these for nearly 20 years. Your furnace guys should know about them.

We have one on our heating system, but it doesn't work well because we are on geothermal...it needs the higher temps of the gas/oil furnaces to work properly.

Son requested a humidifier for Christmas. Got him a Crane cool mist one. Asked if he was having a problem with the white mineral dust--he installed a water softener a couple of months ago--and he told me, 'No, not at all.' (using softened tap water).

I was kind of wary about getting a cool mist one because of the dust problem but he asked for that particular one. And I knew he had the new softener. So I was glad to hear that his water is softened sufficiently to avoid that problem.
