Budget? Goals? Measurements?

Hoping to be as cost efficient as possible. Prefer under $12,000 - not including new appliances. Will be doing the work ourselves. Not our first Reno but our first small kitchen. Simple, traditional kitchen with the best utilization of the limited space.

If it were my kitchen I'd do a galley rather than an L or U. Corners take up linear footage that you need for appliances.. Looks like you have room to center the sink on the window with the DW on the right (toward the dining area). Fridge and range on the other side, with fridge near the dining end and range toward the back wall, offset enough from the sink so you don't bump butts if one person is at the sink and the other at the range.

I agree with a galley. Are you okay having the kitchen extend a bit into the seating/dining area? It looks like you’re currently using the hutch in that space so I placed the fridge at that end. Should be easily accessible. Run the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and you’ll gain storage. Since you’re diy’ing, I would expect ikea to have good options for you.

Nothing on the back wall, other than some pretty artwork! If you have the budget to add a window (and that is an external wall), you could put a window there. The whole point of a galley is to have two straight runs of counter, no corners, to maximize your counter space and optimize your appliance placement.

Even with a small space 12k seems very unrealistic unless keeping present cabinets. IKEA presently only has low inventory in two stores the rest are out of kitchen stock altogether. I have been on a notify me when inventory returns list for months and there is no online ordering except for in store pickup in two states. And just ordering fridge surround cabinets consisting of two tall 15x 15x90 cabinets, one 36x15x15 cabinet, four draws and 4 doors comes to almost 2k. Maybe plan layout now but wait and save for a larger budget in the meantime.

You can totally do this for $12k if you go with an inexpensive cabinetry line and use laminate countertops. I have not used ikea, but built a kitchen plan that included a lot more cabinetry than what you’re looking at and it was about $8k thru ikea. If you can assemble and install yourself you won’t have labor costs, and laminate counter tops won’t add a lot of expense. You still have sinks/faucets/pulls and incidentals but I think your budget is reasonable. People on houzz spend a lot of time talking about $70k kitchens—but a lot of homes in some areas of the country don’t support that. 15 years ago I bought a brand new, cute as a button, 3 bedroom house for $70k in a very low cost of living area. You can’t reasonably put a $40k kitchen in a $100k house, it just doesn’t make sense to do so, and a lot of folks out there have $100k homes. Good luck with your project!

The actual real cost of an ikea kitchen averaged over 25k in 2014. Even in 2019 doing everything yourself just cabinets, counters and a microwave, no pullouts or extras cost this 10x10 kitchen owner over 7k even after using a 20 percent off sale promo. Honestly just simple cabinets and simple counters RTA is still a huge part of your budget even if you are able to source RTA cabinets which right now is near impossible.

People on houzz who warn of real costs are trying to be helpful not discouraging. I think it is dangerous to set people up to believe that HGTV prices and results are reasonable expectations. I am happy people told me to wait and save longer. For now I will have a kitchen I love instead of one I could not afford to do properly.

Sorry this is my first post on here and realized I lacked a few details in the original post. I am looking for advice on the space not the budget. We have access to means to work within our budget just new to working in a small space.

Anyways. The windows face the neighbors house. I am not sure if a galley kitchen with a sink facing the neighbors yard or a galley kitchen is practical at all due to the location of the windows

With your budget I would not plan to move the sink or electrical for the stove they require permits which would eat a lot of your budget straight away not to mention the extra supply costs. This said I have a sink under a window that faces my neighbor’s yard not mine and is not an issue really.

It seems you’re committed to the L. Or at least skeptical of the galley, at best. If you keep the L, you lose a lot of functional space that you could use by putting cabinetry on the window wall. You could do a U, but then you get limited function out of the spaces in the corners. With that amount of space, a galley will allow you to get full function out of 2 walls of cabinetry, both in the bases and the uppers. I don’t find looking at the neighbor’s house to be any less attractive than looking at a blank wall straight ahead (but perhaps there are key factors about your neighbors that could change the score!) and most folks do really want a sink in front of the window. The layout I put together above works with your measurements, but if that would push too much into your dining space it’s pretty easy to re-work that a bit.

The galley doesn't require having the sink under the window, that is just a natural placement for it since most people don't love staring at a cabinet while they do dishes. In my current kitchen, my main prep area is centered on the window, which is very nice - that's another option. As for looking at the neighbor's house, you can always use a privacy film, blinds, or even stained or frosted glass if you want privacy (I have privacy film on mine since my neighbors' house is just 15' away and their kitchen window looks right into mine). Even with a film, the light and space from the window is nice to have around an area where you will spend a lot of time (i.e. prep area and/or sink).

As Muriel mentioned, the galley could be reworked in any number of ways to give you the configuration that works best and doesn't impinge on your dining space. IMO, you don't have enough room in your kitchen to be wasting any of it on corners.

The moment I saw your initial post and photos, I thought: this should be a galley kitchen! I LOVE mine! It will open things up and make your space feel so much bigger and more functional.

This layout would involve moving the 240V electrical wiring, but the plumbing would stay m/l in the same area--maybe could be adjusted with extended supply lines and a twist or two of the drain pipe. You could use a frost treatment on the window, to let in light but keep privacy (for you and the neighbor). Items could be rinsed at the sink, then moved to the opposite counter, under the window, for prep and cooking. The range hood could be vented to the exterior. Cabinet sizes to be determined--this is just to place appliances:

It also places the range on the exterior wall which should make ventilation easier to manage. Good suggestions that show alternatives to the sink in front of the window.

Here is some design we have worked through with Ikea. It’s just enough room for this style. I believe a L shape would just not have enough counter / cupboard space.
