Should this half wall with columns be painted all white or leave as is

This is an 100 year old home with a lot of original woodwork. We want to keep most of the original woodwork but does the two tone half wall work or should we paint the columns and remainder white? Here are a couple photos. Don’t mind all the holiday clutter.

I’d leave them wood personally. Consider painting the bottom part black or another deep color To ground them. maybe a green like the dresser by the doorway even.

I have the same color in my room. it pulls a lot of blue, doesn' it! I also paired Kendall Charcoal w/that color. I used it on an accent wall. I like the backs in that gray or do a darker color. either works fine. the shelves will be white, yes? and then you'll have your books or whatever on them, so you will only see a small portion of the back. I think any color you choose will be fine.

Here are 4 of the colors we have talked about in above comments..marscapone can give off the slightest tint of green...Dove Wing is a beautiful neutral white you can’t go wrong using it any space....Pale Oak is one of my favs it is still light but gives a soft warm glow..allows trim to contrast.

Are the walls painted a dark or bright, or deep color? If they are then i might think of painting them. If they are more neutral I would do as jmm said first. You can always give a painting allowance in the sales contract. The chance of YOU picking the the exact colors that I would are fairly slim. Wouldn't spend the money unless I had to

There have been some great suggestions, but I feel like we’re working in a vacuum here. What is your vision for your home? Although this has focused on the knotty pine, whether to paint it, and what flooring to pick, so much of the process is about the style you want, the furniture you have (or will buy), the colors you like, and the budget. I could go with light oak flooring, old Oriental rugs, nautical touches, red and navy and off-white, but I could also pick a dark green marmoleum floor, Morris chairs, black painted bookcases, a more rustic vibe, and plaids. How do you see it all coming together?

I would leave the tops the way they are. Did someone paint the bottom part? Was it dark before? If so, I would strip the paint off the bottoms, so that the columns and the base all blend together. Without the dark bottom, the dark tops appear to be floating in air. The bases need to be dark to anchor the tops.

100 yr old craftsman homes would never have painted woodwork or brick like your fireplace. Try to revert to original details.

As someone who has stripped wood in her 160 year old house, don't paint ;^). There is probably a better solution, take some closer pictures. Some straight on. Thinking that you might want it to strip the bottom portion. Good luck!
