Sliding glass doors, or French doors opening outward - crossposte
Comments (30)marti8a- We have 2 sets of aluminum clad, low e, argon filled sliders and a set of the same outward opening french doors, all by Eagle (now owned by Andersen, but independent when we purchased them 8 years ago). They all operate easily, close securely and have no air infiltration, we are in NNY and have wind, cold and snow and have never had a problem. While I like the look of french doors better, we chose sliders in two our of three locations because we wanted screens on the doors, we don't have or want A/C, so screens are on the doors are a must for us. The one french door we have will someday open onto a small sunroom/conservatory (hopefully), that's why we chose a set of french doors in that area. Eagle, as well as the other well known manufacturers, have lots of options on the interior; primed, painted, stained, different wood species, hardware options, etc. We rented a house with vinyl sliders when we were building and I would not recommend them at all, they didn't work well, ice built up in the channels and the cold air poured in seemingly from the entire opening. I strongly prefer the wood interior and aluminum clad exterior, but overall I would get the best ones you can afford, good doors and windows pay for themselves in the form of lower energy costs. Good luck- sandyponder...See MoreExterior Doors opening outward?
Comments (20)The stop molding surrounding the door frame when it swings inward protects the door edges from damage too. It also keeps intruders from getting a pry bar to the edge of the door and prying it loose from either the lock side or the hinge side. And, with the stops on the exterior, wind and precipitation are denied easy entry. DH's house in MA has a back door which swings inward, but the storm door swings outward and it is on the north side of the house and really exposed to the wind and drifting snow. The worst year I remember it was piled up against the door and we had to get out through the basement---where the door rolled up and we could just kick the two feet of snow out of the way, or blow it away. On boats that I've worked on, the bunk room doors opened outward. It was puzzling to me why, except the person inside might more easily push it open. And with water rising in a sinking boat, it might keep the weight of the water from pushing in the door and drowning a person quickly. It could give them a pocket of air in a sinking boat. It gives me the chills to think about it now. Also, the exterior hatches (with dogs inside and out) also opened outward. Water is powerful. They made it harder for the sea to get in. All the time, it is tap tap tapping against the hull, saying, "let me in let me in."...See MoreHelp Please! Swinging Pantry Door
Comments (17)Growing up we had 3 swinging doors leading from the butlers pantry, kitchen, and dining room and even though my mother loved the doors, they didn't have the stops, were heavy to "bum push" open, and were "kid killers"! Every one of us 5 children have a story to relate to being sideswiped by being on the wrong side of the door as it swung in/out. I still have the crooked finger from having the door swing shut with my hand pinched between the frame and door. My wheelchair bound grandmother could never get through the door before it swung back on her. If we'd had the stops that are pictured in your original picture, we surely would have kept the doors installed. When our house was sold, the new owners reinstalled the doors, and were more than happy with the look/effect, but they had no children or wheelchair bound seniors. In my opinion the stops are mandatory to installing the doors....See MoreSteam Shower Frameless Door Swing Direction
Comments (3)I have a steam shower, and yes, a teeny bit of steam escapes, but the shower is way more than steamy enough anyway. I'm thinking that maybe this is something they haven't done before? The door doesn't need an airtight seal in order for you to have a good steam....See MoreHU-412631568
