My shady corner bed - what can I do with it? (pics)
Comments (8)yea it does look good, why do you want to jazz it up. if you want a puch of color, how about a container of some shade tolerant annual (impatients?) that you could change with the seasons. or some bulbs sutible to your area. pot up some more orchids and put them into the corner to a a splash. diggerb...See MoreWhat would be approp. floor or tile for my front entry/foyer?
Comments (4)Hi, quite often you would see the vestibules tiled up to mid-wall height, with subway tile and chair rail and base moldings also in ceramic. The floor would be small unglazed mosaic. There could be a border like a greek key or other pattern, and there could be an actual mosaic "rug" in the center. It was popular to have the family monogram or last name inlaid, or even just the house number. People often went overboard when decorating these spaces, as it was among the first things that a caller would see, and they were acutely attuned to making the first impression an overwhelmingly strong statement about their wealth/class. Comments (9)DM, I tried everything I could think of to embed your photos here and nothing worked. Sorry. Snapfish doesn't seem to be set up to posted photos on forums. Too bad. Do you have a photobucket account? They are very easy to use and you can even share clickable thumbnails. They seem to have every kind of code you'd need to post anywhere that I've ever wanted to post to. As for you entry. I love the table! That is one gorgeous piece. It seems to have been made for your home. The table runner is awesome too, but it could limit you on art selection. Once you get a large piece of art on the wall I don't think the lack of wall color will matter. This way, as you both want, the features of your home along with the decor, will be the show piece. You won't need color on the walls to "make" the room. As for wall art, what about making your own? I know you don't like to paint walls, but.....? There's so many other ideas for DIY art too. You say you thought about horizontal wood. Why not do it as "art" instead of the whole wall? I just bought a square coffee table for three ninety nine at a local thrift store and if Restore a Finish does it's trick, I might just use the top for art. This picture is really terrible, but it has burled and parquet wood veneer. Check thrift stores for large works or art or mirrors with or with great frames. If you don't like the art just use the frame. My brain is slowing down. I need food. Good luck! It's good to "see" you again....See MoreWhat do you think about a stone wall in a 2 story foyer/entry?
Comments (23)Call me crazy, but if a house has a foyer that "feels more like a hotel lobby", you have other, much bigger problems -- like creating a warm and welcoming home. lindsey, I do know about cutting off the blossom end : ). As for shorter canning times, I was born a city girl and have always been nervous with recipes from family and friends with canning times considerably shorter than what district home economists, Ball Blue Book etc. recommend, which is usually 15-20 minutes for quart jars and no less than 10 minutes; my mother in law has been trying to convince me for 25 years that it's safe to chicken in a boiling water bath in a regular canner rather than a pressure canner, and I'm just not willing to risk it, esp when it comes to my husband and kids. We're also probably pickier about taste than some people -- for example, I used to process in the canner 1- and 2-quart jars of the apple cider we press every fall, but we realized we don't care for the "cooked" taste, so we freeze the cider now instead. Some people have wine fridges and we have a pickle fridge lol. And several chest freezers for cider, our own beef, chickens, turkeys, venison, fruit and vegetables! april, the chicks stay in the incubator in the house just until they're dry and then out they go. We don't always have helpful broody hens to do the setting for us so the incubator is a huge help....See MoreNicole Dinerman
