36" CD vs. 42" built-in fridge - worth the upcharge? Alternatives?

I have been playing around with ideas for a future kitchen remodel and it has become clear to me that getting rid of my full-depth fridge will greatly improve my layout options. However, a 36" counter depth fridge is not large enough for our household - I had one in our last kitchen and while we made it work, it was not ideal. I started looking at 42" built-ins and while I think the size would be adequate (approximately the same cubic feet as current full-depth model), the prices are eyewatering in comparison to a 36" CD.
I also started browsing under-counter and drawer fridges and while they aren't necessarily cheap, you can buy a pretty nice set of drawers for WAY less than the upcharge from 36" to 42." Has anyone chosen the 36 CD plus under counter combo, and if so, how do you like it? Freezer space isn't a concern because I have a second freezer in the basement (I don't want an extra fridge down there, though). Thanks in advance!
