Smoke detectors driving us crazy
Comments (12)I would disconnect the off brand unit first and try that for two days. If it alam continues, one of the other units may be defective. I would then try disconnecting them one and leave disconnected for two days at at time till I isolate the problem. Also check the wiring that none of them touch in the units where you may of spliced a new plug in to fit a new detector that the old plug would not fit. Oddly, these units do not last forever. If you do some spackling or sanding before painting your rooms or house, the dust could cause the detector to malfunction in the middle of the night or you use a heater, firplace, smoke or do heavy cooking it could all set the system off. The most notable manufacturer is firex and sears also makes a good unit. It is not a major problem and I am sure if you follow the directions you will isolate the unit causing the problem...See MoreSmoke detector wiring
Comments (13)Interconnects ayyre required. The big box stores often don't carry stuff that the don't think some harry homeowner DIY will buy. You may have to go to a proper supply store (or order online). Lots of interconnectable smokes out there, but you may have to just buy all new ones rather than trying to find ones compatible with what you have if they are older units. I pointed out in my first post that the code would depend on where he is, however,r the stuff I posted was straight from the International Residential Code which does apply in a lot of places....See MoreSmoke and Carbon detectors
Comments (14)Also the actual act of burning carbon-made materials (most anything earthy) is where Carbon Monoxide comes from. So a wood burning fireplace could possibly provide deadly levels of CO just as much as a gas-fired appliance like a water heater or furnace is capable of doing. Also also your internet service company brings a wire to your house. They provide or rent you, or you buy yourself, a modem that "translates" the signals coming over that wire, and you can choose to connect a hardwire from the modem to your computer. Or you can choose to attach a router (or use a combo modem/router) to the modem, where the router sends this translated signal out either wirelessly (wi-fi) around your house about 75' or so, and/or you can connect multiple hard wires for equipment into the router. As far as buying Z-Wave interconnected battery detectors, these products use radio waves to send signals to each other (the Z-wave technology). However, AFAIK, you do not need any internet connectivity for them to function - they are a stand alone, closed system. Only if you want to access the detectors through your smartphone, computer, or security system, would you then need to install a Z-wave gateway product which catches their radio signal and then you can control the units over the internet....See MoreNewly installed mini split tripping breaker. Comments (3)I agree with that ^^^ and appearantly you burned the toast. Odds of succesful diy electric work can be predicted by two questions. #1 Do you own or have access to a multimeter? #2 Do you understand what the various dial settings are for and how to use them? If there is a no in there anywhere, put the screwdriver back in your toolbox and call a pro before you cause damage that costs you 10x what a pro would have charged to begin with....See MoreUser
