What do I do to make fireplace look more modern?

We are planning to white wash the fireplace and may be paint the grout with a darker color. Any suggestions on what else can I do to make it look a little more modern and nicer?

I think finding a new mantle would be the modernizing clincher than anything else. And maybe don’t highlight the grout lines with a darker color. The whitewash and a new mantle should be enough.

Replace the mantle or remove it altogether. Don’t paint the grout lines dark. Will look crazy busy. If anything, soften the lines when you whitewash. Tip: the weird lense effect you are using on pics doesn’t give a realistic photo. Makes your room look worse than it probably actually is.

In the photos all the colors seem to appear grayer/bluer than I would expect from how the colors normally appear. That does point to a lighting problem. Not enough natural light combined with not enough indoor light, and maybe not the right color temperature of indoor light. If you have LEDs in your ceiling fixtures, it could also be a problem with poor color rendering (LEDs vary a lot in their color rendering index, or CRI--look for 90 or higher). If you have LEDs, I would check the lamp characteristics first. If the color temperature is above 3000, or the CRI is below 90, that could be your problem. I think Herbflavor may be right though: Your current lighting seems in adequate. Your kitchen would probably benefit from more lighting fixtures (recessed cans) and more total lumen output. Warmer color temperatures (2700-3000K) should help bring out the yellow in the Ivory Lace.

I coil some of mine back but they have a mind of their own at times. I bought this as a golden philodendron years ago but it looks like a pothos. In summer it grows anywhere it wants to and in fall I pull up the longer vines as carefully as possible and coil it back on the coir lined basket. This is what it looked like in 2015 - guess I cut it back after that year. And how it looks like in 2020 Easy to start new pots too.

@kjr0625 - before you change things, have an architect design the changes and create some renderings. I fear that removing the vertical lines will make that front look really boring and sparse, and it's worth the extra money to be able to really see how it's going to look before you actually do it. Personally, I think those lines are the best feature of that house and I would love to see it preserved. An architect could help you come up with other ideas that might make you happy. Of course it's your home so you should feel free to do what you want! @Patricia Colwell It also in not MCM but a great example of a 80's contemporary house stay true to that era for sure. It definitely captures the MCM spirit for sure though. I happen to love these, even when they do lean more 70s/80s!

Really comes down to your taste/needs, the adjoining space and your budget. Flooring is the first decision, as that will influence choices. Suggest searching “small front entry” on Pinterest to decide if you want to decorate around or change, and to see decor ideas. Option 1: Just update the shelf and accessorize. Option two: coordinate the entire area, keeping in mind the adjoining flooring and room. A narrow bench is always a practical choice.

Not sure what you mean by modern as there is no context here as far as your furnishing nor do you have any photos in an Ideabook that shows us what you like. Your posted photos show a traditional room just in the color of the floor stain and the grilles in the slider. Do you have a whole plan put together for this room? As if you change the mantle, which is out of proportion and clean the stone, the fireplace may work for you as it looks to be a nice stone. Also, this looks like a wood burning fireplace based on what appears to be soot above the box? If it is, think about how difficult that will be to take off of paint and how it eventually will look on white.

Here is a visual that shows a white wash (though it looks a bit gray to me) with dark grout and a dark mantle. And another one with a mantle that is in proportion with a lighter grout.
