Insulation in a wall with no vapor barrier

Hello, Thanks for reading this post. I want to insulate the walls in my house from the inside as I am removing the old plaster board and installing plywood shear walls and sheet rock. It was built in 1940. The exterior siding is redwood V-lap which is in excellent shape and was recently painted. The vapor retarder (between the wall studs and the siding) is the original building paper and has mostly deteriorated due to previous water damage which has now been resolved. Here is my question: Can I use closed cell rigid insulation boards between the studs and seal the joints with a spray foam? I live in Berkeley, CA which has a pretty moderate climate. I don't want to create moisture problems in the walls but would like at least some insulation. Any advice???
