Pearls before swine

“Do not cast your pearls before swine,” meaning don’t offer anything of value and merit to people incapable of appreciating it. It can be traced to the earliest writings in English. In Langland’s Vision of Piers Plowman, for instance, we find “Noli mittere Margeri – perles Among hogges” and in the King James Bible (Matthew 7:6) there is this injunction: “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.”
