Mike Rivers is spot on for your definition of the spiral shape you desire. High centered, exhibition form, etc...will get you what you want. Palatine has the best bareroot roses on the North American continent at the present time in my opinion. They offer mostly Kordes roses which are known for their superiour toughness to weather conditions and temperature extremes compared to most other breeders of hybrid tea roses. I grow in Northwest Missouri and do not winter protect specifically. I rely on Ma Nature and the leaves that fall from a couple of big trees on my property to gather around the base of the bushes and that seems to insulate mine well enough. I really don't lose many if any at all during the winter even though I grow a couple that are "notoriously winter tender". St. Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, Color Magic, etc.. are some that supposedly can't survive my winters, yet I have grown these for five years or more and have not lost any of them. I do generally have to prune to almost ground level in the spring especially on St. Patrick, but they always come roaring back and within a couple of months you could never tell they were pruned so low. The main thing is to make sure your roses are HEALTHY and not stressed going into winter to give them the best chance to survive winter. John

Nastara - order now. They let you select when you want them shipped. I'm having mine shipped the first week in April. You want to plant bareroots early in the spring - earlier than you would a potted plant. But with the spring rains I usually can't plant until April or sometimes May (it will be too wet). So I ask for the roses at the beginning of April and I keep them in the garage until I can plant them. They hold up fine for a few weeks if you keep them hydrated. I will agree with Diane that Carmel Fairytale is quite disease resistant. It and Elina are taking over my garden while my other roses look like sticks. I will warn you that Carmel Fairytale gets quite large even in a cold zone where it will dieback every winter.

Sunset Dreams by Brad Jalbert is very like Augusta Luise. I got it from Palatine 2 yrs. ago, but they dont offer it now. Bon Appetit, also from them at the same time, is a lovely rose much like Augusta Luise. Not sure I dont like Sunset Dreams just as well as Augusta Luise......its a beauty. Mango Veranda, which they have now, is beautiful! Blooms arent quite as big but maybe it would be something pretty to grow while you are waiting for AL pippa. Wish Palatine would grow more of Brad Jalbert's roses - I really like them. I called David Austin Roses today and put in an order. Dame Judi Dench "didnt make" in the fields which is why its not on the list. I lost mine - it was a small plant - potted it up well, but it was quite wispy, thin canes, blooms were not big. I was giving it benefit of the doubt to grow another season, but it just faded away. Hope its not going to be another Summer Song. I really like the Austin apricots. I was disappointed that Scarborough Fair was sold out. Heard good things about it and wanted to try it. I did get most of what I wanted at this time. I will probably add to my order; I pick mine up since I am only 2 hours away. I bet Evelyn wont last long - there was a long pause when I asked for that one.......then she said she could get me one. She also said the new 2020 catalogs were not in yet. I like going to Tyler and picking one up, can hardly stand to wait for it. Last year, mine arrived Dec. 31. Probably the only difference will be the new 2020 roses. It is a marvelous catalog and have enjoyed reading it all year. Judith

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Kristine, I hate to "like" your comment, lol, but I do agree the whole experience was frustrating. There's a lot more detail to my travails with their website, but a lot of it is repetitive and not very interesting! But just one example is the Ascot I first had in my cart that was "sold out", then back, then "sold out" AGAIN before I could check out...on I think the fifth or sixth attempt. This was after hovering over my computer for at least three hours at this point. Never again.
