Can an Ikea Havsen apron sink be installed as undermount?

I’m looking to install a 24” Ikea Havsen undermount sink in my laundry room but prefer the look of undermount (but love the cost of the Havsen). Any reason we couldn’t undermount this? I’m having quartz countertops installed (templating has not happened yet, so I have time). I would install a wood support/cleat horizontally along insides of cabinet to support sink...and install vertical braces as well to support the horizontal clear. Any need for strapping? I’ve seen that mentioned in other chats, but was not specific to apron front, ceramic sink. The one issue I could see, but not sure it’s an issue- perhaps the top of the sink is a bit more rounded than a typical undermount apron sink, but would that be an install issue? Or noticeable? Of course silicon would be used...if this could work should countertop reveal be flush or 1/8” in this situation (the amount the countertop overhangs the sink) stock photos included of the ikea sink. I’m also having custom door fronts made, so lowering the sink is not an issue in regards to the cabinet fronts. Thanks in advance for any input... there doesn’t seem to be too much info out in internet about the install of these sinks.

You can undermount that sink, especially since you'll have custom doors. Use a small positive reveal and a strap/harness system, not wood blocking, please.

Hi Writersblock! What were you thinking would be a concern? Here's what we know from our install-- let me know if there's something we missed! The edges of the sink when undermounted are the same height as all the cabinets in the sink run, so while the sink probably bears some weight, it bears no more or less than any of the other cabinets in the run. The countertops in ANY sink run aren't supported continuously-- they're supported periodically along the run by cabinet sides. Whether the weight is supported at any particular point by a wooden cabinet edge or a porcelain sink edge shouldn't really matter at any rate-- we're only talking about a few hundred pounds of wood, tile or stone. The only time you'd have a problem is if someone screwed up and raised or lowered a cabinet (or a sink, I guess) so far that you'd cause a stress crack. So as long as all the cabinets and undermount sink are the same level, unless someone did something REALLY strange, havig a thick, sturdy (and the Domsjo is nothing, if not that) porcelain sink bear its fair share of countertop weight shouldn't be worth a second thought.

It's a great cabinet, but based on other people's posts in the past, you might want to give some consideration to how you will remove it should the sink ever need to be replaced. Mapping out a strategy now may help you down the road.

There are very contemporary apron front sinks with flat aprons. The ones from stainless are especially sleek looking and look gorgeous in even the most modern kitchens - at least to me. I am getting one that is less deep than many since I am short. It will be 8” instead of the 9” to 10” of some styles. There is no doubt that it makes more of a statement than an undermount sink so unless you are short or are really going for a farmhouse or more rustic type of look, it might be something that might be considered more on trend and therefore might become dated to some people who are less certain of their own taste. But I don’t think apron sinks will be more dated in ten years than white waterfall islands.

Perhaps I am not understanding the issue but under mount sinks can be installed with a negative reveal, positive reveal or zero reveal. The zero reveal is one which is flush with the counter. You need to have the fabricator and installer do the counter and installation in this way. My understanding is that it is a bit more difficult to do because it needs to be so precise but that the issue relates to the counter template and installation of the sink rather than the sink itself.

That will work, but with your centered drain, I'd recommend 2 Sink Straps.

It may look a little funny with the flange in the front, but it can be done if your doors allow.
