Comments (4)Seeds are on the way, Wm, wish I could supply you with more, if you need something just ask, I might have it. I'm a garden addict, hope springs eternal. In hindsight, last years garden was bigger, finer, and produced more (than it actually did) In the middle of winter, when your hands are itching to plant, you just remember everything more fondly, than you did in the heat of summer, when sweat was dripping off the end of your nose, and you think you can barely make it to the deck to rest in the heat. And, it will be the same this year, as it has in almost the last 70 summers. Spring is my downfall, when I have been deprived of growing all winter, thats when I need to curb my impulses to plant more and more--forgetting the sweat. but-then in winter, seeing all those beautiful jars of tomatoes, pizza sauce, spagetti sauce, salsa, relish, etc lined up in my cabinets, insures that the cycle will start all over again. Spring, will you never get here??...See MoreDoes Santa Claus grow a fall Garden?
Comments (16)It might have bothered me if I had been home, but I worked. In winter, I went to work in the dark and came home in the dark, and during the day I was so busy that I didn't have time to think about it. During the summer it was fantastic. A lot of women got serious cabin fever in the winter and some people would have to put foil on their windows so they could sleep. I found winter to be fun because the cold is dry and you can play outside. We loved to tube down the hills, and ice skate. After we moved to Oklahoma (east of Norman), my children said they all needed to talk to me about something. I thought they had a serious problem so we planned a time later that night so we could talk about it. Their problem.....they all wanted a new winter coat because they were freezing at the bus stop. We went the next day and bought longer coats that were water resistant and would stop they wind, and that solved the problem. Our boys love it there and would love to go back. I have never had a desire to live anywhere cold since I broke my back. I have 9 inches of steel going down both sides of my spine and it gets cold. I never had trouble with the cold before I got Harrington rods in my back, but if I get too cold now, I just shake all over. Valdez is a nice place to visit....ends there for me. Alaska is the one place that I have lived where no one cares what anyone else does, or wears, or how much money they make, etc. If you went 'out on the town', one table might be in formal wear and the next one in blue jeans, and no one cared. It was a place where everyone lived their own life the way they wanted to live it, and if didn't hurt someone else, they were just left alone. I loved the sled dog races. Of course, in Anchorage it wasn't a sure thing that you would have enough snow for the beginning of the race. We still had a house in Wasilla for several years after we moved back to the 'lower 48'. After Al retired from the USAF and we were living in Ohio, he and our son drove back to Wasilla to work on the house. The repairs took 3 days, but they were gone two months. I think the fishing was just too good. LOL...See MoreBest find today wasn't a herp....
Comments (5)Swan Lake is about 87 miles by road Northwest of Columbia. Diamondback Water Snakes are present at Swan Lake, but strangely I haven't seen any yet that I could positively ID as such there, although some of my "Blotched Water Snakes" at a distance could perhaps be Diamondbacks for all I know. I know further west at Squaw Creek NWR, Diamondbacks seem to be by far the dominant nerodia. I have always been intrigued by which nerodia fills a niche, since at Mingo NWR, Broad-Bandeds are abundant but at Snake Road they are absent. However, Snake Road has Mississippi Greens in decent numbers, and Yellowbellies rule there among Nerodia. As for bobcats, I imagine wild areas in the South Central Ozarks around dawn and dusk would be the best places, but its hard to argue with a place where I have actually seen one....See MoreRight Down Santa Claus Lane
Comments (19)Punk, That's sweet of you to "feel my pain." Actually, I've often thought about making chair covers for Christmas (and the 4th of July as well.). I started a collection of the chairs when we were a young couple. I'd get two every three or four month when they went on sale. They been used at First Communions, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and even one party where a young woman was sworn into the California State Bar. (My neice is a judge and she swore in my best friend's daughter.) My friends just come by and pick them up whenever they need them. They have served us well, but they are so terribly industrial looking, and I especially notice it when they're used inside at Christmas. I think I shall vow to make a set for Christmas and for the Fourth, as I always use them on those two holidays. Hey! That might be my New Years Resoltuion....See Morenickel_kg
