Need advice on a bar front or island redo

The pic is one side of a big bar and I’d like to change the glass and metal face with something more updated. The other side has the same glass metal face.

Can the metal be removed from the green glass? Who would you contact to do that or could I do it myself? Anyone know how that can be done?

Can the entire glass and metal be removed? Or can you tile over the glass of the metal can be removed?

Anyone have any ideas of what could look more current? I like the main bar material itself as it’s a nice tile with fossils. I just think the glass metal face looks a bit dated. The home is contemporary and I was thinking maybe replacing the glass metal with a tile that has a look and texture rough like sand and a sand color maybe.

i also thought maybe a lighter color beige leather could be interesting.

The home is in the desert and I like the idea of a contemporary desert sort of theme.

i'm not hating what's there.

you could just leave it and put a piece of cement board over it. Then tile on top of that. trim out the sides w/wood.

more of a mosaic, but the sides are trimmed out w/metal edging

what's the other material, brick? I'd prob paint that a solid color

or replace it w/something else?

how about if you replace the counter and waterfall it?

maybe bring it out a little further, but have the countertop 'waterfall' over the side.

with large cement tile in the middle

or do a custom cement waterfall countertop

in the middle, do a herringbone

or something mod

find a cool terrazzo tile or cement tile, and try something like this

The bar is a tile that looks like shiny marble with fossils and it’s smooth. The pic isn’t the greatest.

We originally put in recessed lights in the aisles, but now that the cabinets have been installed, we are wondering whether we should move them. We also are not sure where to put the light fixture over the island or whether to combine it with recessed cans too? The layout of cabinets is shown below. At the bottom right of the picture, there is a beam that holds up the supporting wall that we got rid of, so it separates the actual kitchen from the dinette. We will have undercabinet lighting. Right now, the recessed lights are approximately 3 feet away from the top wall and bottom wall shown in the picture. I think they look odd since the lights are neither centred over the wood canopy nor over the cabinets to the left and right of it. Please help me with the placement of these lights while my plaster/drywall guy is still here so that he can patch up any holes in the ceiling.

Porch redo, need advice and good railings!

I'm embarassed to post this it looks so awful. The front porches look a lot better, at least they are all straight tho missing some rails and skirts. We are also removing the narrow aluminum corner pieces and replacing them with appropriately wide wood or wood composite boards which we will paint dark brown. (Dark brown, light brown which you see onthe two windows to the left of the porch, and dark green are our trim and accent colors. Not sure what to paint the doors yet.) Thing to the right of the back door is a water heater which will be going down to the cellar. The main steps are on the leftt side, 2nd steps currently on right. Plan is to move 2nd steps to right hand side of the back, to go down into the yard. My dh removed the cheap skirts so the crooked support posts are exposed. I don't know where the yellow on the eaves came from. Its there in real life, guess its the sun!

Thanks for clarifying some important issues, like budget. I was thrown a bit before because you were talking about Wolf appliances. What is on your must have list? Is it flow? Is it that cooktop? Since the walls have already been fixed up, where are the existing power, gas, ventilation and sink drops? Are you on a slab or raised foundation? That Wolf cooktop is going to require ventilation, for example, and moving ventilation can get tricky. To me, the options open up (and flow improves) once that wall between the kitchen and small dining area is opened up. You could extend the island and also move some of the storage and appliances over a bit, while still retaining those lovely pocket doors. But the costs definitely would begin to rise, due to the existing layout. With the existing plans, don't rotate the island, you are creating a barrier to the fridge, cooktop and sink. LIkewise, putting the sink opposite the cooktop is not ideal, without a greater space in the aisle. You need a two-bottom kitchen, it seems. Thus, 48 inches from that Wolf cooktop (that sticks out three inches) to the opposite counter edge is needed. Hopefully some of the pros will chime in.

When trimming, keep in mind that this is a matched set of “bookends,” so they should be exact, mirror image duplicates of each other as much as possible. I would think of the trimming project as a challenge … as if you were involved in a manufacturing process making a machine project on a lathe or something along those lines. It would not be at all detrimental to use a tape measure to double check dimensions for matching throughout the process. I would rough out the shapes of both before fine tuning either. The place to begin is standing back well away from them trying to envision what they are to become. If the shrub needs to be moved a little left, right or forward, this is the time to notice it and account for the adjustments you’ll need to make in the cutting. It really barely matters where the plant roots are located. If you the shrub to be 4” to the right, “move” it there with the cutting process. It’s important to envision the finished product before cutting because there is a substantial part of them that won’t get any cutting at all. If you just charged up on them and started hacking away, there’s a good chance you’d cut some wrong parts off. Since the pair of shrubs are matched, the first cuts to make should determine the height. (To match the pair, follow a line on the siding of the house as a guide. Don’t measure from the ground.) Keep in mind that you do NOT want to cut at the place where you envision the limits of the finished product to be (the red line in picture.) There are three reasons for this. As soon as you finish cutting the plant it’s going to grow and if you cut it at the finished height, in a short time it will grow too large. The second reason is because, even though you tried hard to make it a perfect shape, it’s not going to end up as perfect as you’d hoped for. Later, when you need to trim and try to perfect it again, you will want to be cutting only in the newer, softer, easier-to-cut foliage, rather than in the hard, sticky, woody portion. If you don’t cut a little smaller in the first place, you’ll probably end up where the next cutting has to dip somewhere into the woody portion of the plant again. This is a royal pain. If you make the plant a little smaller to begin with, it gives you a “cushion” against having this happen. In general, I find that people have a strong resistance to cutting the plant smaller (the blue line in the picture.) But do yourself a favor and get over this. If you mistakenly cut this plant to a stub, in two years you’d barely remember your error because it would be pretty large again. In cutting it just 6” less than you want it to be, in two months you’ll barely remember or notice that you did that. The third reason you want to cut the plant a little smaller than the “finished product size” is because the more foliage you remove from the top portion of the plant, the greater it is that you expose the bottom portion (the part that is undercut and desperately needs to grow) to more light and an improved chance of quicker growth. Between the yellow line (which represents the ground plane) in the picture and the shrub, there is nothing at all to cut … until you get higher up to the blue line. At this cavity at the lower portion of the shrubs, all the foliage will be left untouched so it can continue to grow as quickly as possible. The goal is to keep the upper portions of the shrub trimmed so that it shades the lower portions the least as possible. Even if you want the shrubs to be larger than what I'm showing, for now you should trim them as I'm showing because you're in a corrective phase trying to regain the lost lower foliage. In your second-to-last picture, it shows how a subordinate, adjacent shrub has encroached on the Yew, which is clearly the more important shrub. The lesser shrub should be trimmed such that this doesn't happen.

remove those tile columns on the sides, and bring in something like this wood for the bar top

for the other countertop, replace that, fir out the sides, and do a wainscoting like shown here in the gray.

another wood island top w/waterfall, plus the countertop behind it is also brought down in a waterfall.

the front panel could have a thin veneer adhered, and then something like these reclaimed wood panels glued to it. OR tile. whatever you like

or try something like this

you could veneer the entire front glass part w/copper or brass sheeting.

Here’s a different angle of the bar. I do like a lot of your examples but If I change it, I only want to take out the glass and I’m wondering if that’s a task I could do or is it too difficult a job.

I think I’d like better if the metal part of the bottom could be removed but that’s one of my questions, can that be done?

I’m in the process of getting this home and just tossing around ideas. Thanks for your input!

Beth, I especially like those examples of what looks like reclaimed wood. I like a more organic look. I want to warm this house up.

ah, ok. I see. the glass is prob inset back on the panel behind the tiles.

no need to remove it.

just veneer it w/the cement board if you want to tile over it.

Or, veneer it w/wood for wood panels.

or veneer some material w/a cement overlay and cover the glass panel with it.

you could also have a metal work take a look and see if he would do a new metal piece over the whole thing.

lots of ideas w/o having to remove the panel.

I love the walnut wood waterfall idea

this one. wouldn't be that difficult to do. you could easily veneer the front panel portion if you did this

shows it down the side. you'd just carry up on top and miter it over in the corner to go the other way

floor and decor sell butcher blocks. you could cut those and 45 them for the sides

could even use some live edge pieces

could also do a cement overlay of that tile

just do the overlay over that tile, then bring in your wood waterfall. redo the panel on the front portion with whatever. this would loo sharp!

want something really cool? do the epoxy filled wood overhang! with cement overlay on the tiles, this would look great!

Might be nice in some ways but the dark tile w fossils is too much of the dark aggressive material . The higher part around the glass and metal could be swapped as per Beth and i would leave the glass and metal at least initially . The look will change. Where are your stools anyway?? Does the dark tile form all counters sides and so on in kitchen? I’d prefer that in a very small dose/ accent.

I’m in escrow on the house so I don’t have any furniture, therefore no bar stools. The room is an unusual design and quite large. I probably won’t be changing the fossil portion of the bar as there is also a fireplace from floor to ceiling that matches it. I’m just not in love with the green glass and metal...to me it looks very 80s. Thanks for your ideas!

very nice.

I think merely doing the wood waterfall on the bar portion would be enough to change it and warm up all the grays.

as for the glass panel front, I've already given you many ideas for that. pick one that you like.
