Most likely marble. Possibly quartzite.

But I 100% do not recommend buying a slab that you can't test. I know that dealers don't like to allow testing, and this is a poor business practice that helps them but hurts you.

Just curious, what does the stone yard call it?

They said it was Dolomite, but I do not think they knew for sure.

Fantasy Blue (or blue fantasy) it's labeled as quartzite or a marble.

could also be similar to Infinity

however, if they say it's Dolomite, then it's Super White

Beautiful Beth H. and great price! Any issues with the dolomite in the bathroom? Its not as likely to come in contact with acidic things. What about rings from glasses left sitting on it or scratches? How long have you had it? Thanks for replying!

I visited it yesterday and the owner said it is dolomite. He let me try scratching it with a key and it didn't scratch. The corner of the slab was hit and broke a bit. The stone was crumbly and a little flakey in little pieces. The corner piece was still firmly in the hard wax plastic band around the edges so I couldn't get a sample, though. Is this characteristic of marble or another stone?

I like another stone in a whole other direction. Everest White. Listed as Granite. It has flecks of mice. Is that bad? There were some rough spots they said were pits that had been filled with resin and tiny stones that will be smoothed out when fabricated. Also want sure how it goes with my light grey cabinets?

That's a nice slab of Everest White, but IMO no, it doesn't go with the gray.

My light granite has lots of mica, and quartz mixed in...plenty of going on. The mica is like jewerly when the morning sun hits it, I can see "through" the layers of this stone. Mine has only been installed for a few months, I also have some spots where they fixed the stone...it was incredibly hard to fabricate they said...zero problems so far. So yes, it's not 100% perfect like man made counter could be, but I love it for what it is.

Amy, the "grains popping out" is more for looking at sandstones that are not stuck together well, or a stone that crumbles apart. In the photo you posted, it looked like the bottom of the slab had bumped into something. But for sure that's something worth inspecting - basically you want to try to pick the stone apart and see what happens.

The mica pieces are sort of the same - can you peel them up or scratch them? Generally the larger they are, the more likely to cause trouble.

Karen_mt Thanks for your help! For the original slab we are deciding on, "Mount Titler" when looking very close at the stone you can see individual grains. Does this indicate a sandstone? I don't think I see cross graines in it, though. I am going to go back and see if I can spray water on the broken edge to see if it soaks it up. Also, looking at some of the tiny crumbled broken pieces does this help identify the stone type? I love all your articles to help navigate this difficult counter process!!

We have ruled out Everest White due to the color not matching our cabinets. It is crazy how they use many names for the same stone. Thanks everyone for your comments!! (Excuse the dust! Sanding drywall!)

You are absolutely right. That's a "grainy" quartzite. That's often a red flag (or maybe an orange flag) for porosity. Try putting a sample partway in a tray of water and see if water wicks up into the stone. Use food coloring if you want to see it better.

Then post photos because this is exactly what other people should try!
