That's a tricky problem! there is a lot of movement in the floor and the tiles have both light and dark components to them. Try this to play around with it a bit.http://www.cdgranite.com/kitchen-visualizer/. It's not perfect and you can't choose your exact floor and counter, but it will help narrow down some places to start.

I would choose something with a md-dark background tone in the rusty brown or even the grey brown and then if you must have granite, make sure the pattern is muted or just a light vein.

Thank you for your comments and visualizer tool! We initially were leaning towards granite called 'Peregrine'. It has all the right colors, but might be too busy... I am totally unsure about anything anymore...

Make sure you can get a sample and bring it home to your house with your lighting. I know the monitors lose a lot of the true nature of color, but the Peregrine appears to have more of a golden tone to it than rust and with cream cabinets I would be aware of bright white mixed in as it will make the cream even more yellow/creamy. I do think a more simple linear pattern like that could work though.

I feel your pain. Our floor is a dark jatoba (Brazilian cherry), but I picked a plain grey quartz (Silestone Cemento) because I am replacing a verde butterfly counter that left me stuck. I figure I can change the backsplash easier than the counters to give it a different look.

Is your tile floor new? You kind of refer to it like it wasn't something you picked... If you think it will change eventually consider what you would put in it's place.

Cambria quartz has some colors that aren't busy and would go well w/the floors.

Typhoon Bordeaux granite might work well
slabs are different so you could try and find one w/more white/less veining.

another cool option would a Jet Mist, honed or leathered.

or find a nice soapstone slab.

Depends on what else you've got going on in your house. Are you keeping the walls cream or white? Do you have a lot of light in the space? I personally looked for something in that med tone because anything cream either was too much of the same or had a white/grey undertone that fought with the cabinets. I agree that your tile and cabinets look good together and that little bit of brown I the glaze pulls in your trim.. I think something dark - like a chocolate brown would look too matchy with your trim and take away from the punch of it. This copper tone might not be rusty enough - hard to tell on a screen. Get some samples and take them home. Quick!

Thank you for showing us pictures with stone that has a lot of movement! We looked and Cygnus Quartzite and the soapstone and liked the look but were not sure about the color. Our old kitchen was walnut color with black counter-tops. I am really hoping to not go back to the very dark side :)

Thank you mnmamax3 ! Our kitchen does not get a lot of natural light during the day. It's nice and sunny for our morning coffee, but after that it is quite gloomy. That's why we went with Swiss Coffee color by Behr for the walls and 'Pearl glaze' cabinets. Hoping for brighter / fresher final product that our family can enjoy :)

the only solid granite you'll find is the black. you may be able to hunt around for a white, but it will always have the speckles.

Your floor tile is kind of cool. What if you did the solid quartz in a cream/white or soft gray, and then did a backsplash to play up the floor? That you could do some cool shapes/colors. For instance,

if you did a concrete countertop and tinted the concrete mix w/your floor coloring, then you could do this really cool Arto coordinating backsplash:

little bit of a Spanish influence, but black perimeter counters, white granite on the island, handmade subway tiles in a cream w/accent tiles.

if you did a creamy ivory countertop, then you could do a cool backsplash in a pattern like this from Arto Custom tile works.

Yours is a little more gold. The trick would be finding the least busy pattern.

sandra, this just my opinion, so...

If I had your floor and cabinets, I don’t think I would be looking at any granite or anything with a pattern. I’d be leaning toward a simple quartz in the same color family as the cabinets. It is my feeling that you can’t have everything in a room a “wow”. Right now you have beautiful cabinets and an obvious floor (which I like, BTW). You will still need wall color and furniture and appliances…

So, I would let the cabinets be the star, the floor next, counters lovely, (but the little black dress) and then use a color on the wall that relates to the floor.

This is Caesarstone Rugged Concrete; on my monitor it looks similar to your cabinet color and I love it with your floor.

I'm glad you decided to choose the solid. I just dropped a ridiculous amount on "plain" counters but I know it is the right choice for me too. You might want to look at Vicostone too - I think Taj Mahal could work also.

I really like Beth's suggestion of grey - IMO there is already a lot of terracotta, and I'd be looking to pull the cooler colors out of the floor rather than the warmer.

Ivory fantasy which looks very similar to the millenium cream posted above. I wish I had picked it for my own kitchen! In fact it may be the same granite with a different name:

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions! My mind is much clearer ;) My next steps now are going to be cabinet pulls and back-splash. I love Beth's idea of complimenting floor color in the back-splash. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of time and will not be able to wait for special order items. However I found these readily available and would love to hear your feedback!

for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO.

Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem.

However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail.

I hope so! That's what I have in my kitchen! SS and a beautiful copper sink. I've had it for 10 years and love it. If you get one, get the mexican copper at 14 gauge...no 16 and nothing from China!

Love your copper sink! It is absolutely stunning!! Our friend is doing counter-tops. He already saw the kitchen layout and will be able to have things done quickly :) My parents are flying in from Europe on 9/26 that's why everyone is on a schedule :)
