Multiple fence puzzle
Comments (3)Bullwhistle and cynandjon, thanks, that definitely makes the most sense. If you look closely at the plan, their fence is close to the property line so we could take ours down. We both moved in about 4 years ago and I think they were shocked to see an uncovered pool next door as they had a couple of toddlers and so they fenced in their entire backyard. We were also a bit shocked by the pool (certainly not the reason we bought the house) and one of the first things we did was have the ugly cover installed for safety reasons. Any suggestions for a good style of open fence to replace the chain link at the bottom and to tie into the side of the house at the top? Their fence drops from 6' to 4' just behind where ours turns the corner (I'm sure they were trying to cover our ugly fence :-)) so it probably makes most sense to tie in there to maintain the 5' height in the pool code. We don't really want a solid fence for the new part, especially at the top end where it ties into the house as we'd rather look out from the porch through a fence into the yard. The first thing that comes to mind is that there are legit (as in safe and tested) canning and pickling info sites and then there are some that are down right dangerous. You have to know the source. ;) The current Ball Blue Book and other approved, current canning books published by food science sources and the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) are the recognized authorities - the legit sources - as well as the many state university extension sites on food preservation as they are USDA approved. Most other online sites and recipes are not considered safe and some are downright dangerous - no matter what they may claim. Their recipes have never been tested for safety nor reviewed and approved, just made-up by folks with no food science background. Without knowing the exact recipes you used we can't help determine if your foods are safe or not. You can compare them to the detailed pickling and fermenting guidelines on NCHFP for starters, but ultimately the decision to keep them or not will be yours as we each determine how much risk we are willing to take. But I can tell you that if the recipe you used was unsafe to begin with or if your "doodling" deviated too far from the approved and tested techniques then the odds are your foods are not safe for consumption. Refrigerating them now, if older than 24 hours, won't help as bacteria has already grown in them. Why not tell us the exact recipe you used for the jars in questions. If so, the decision about whether to go with a 48" range (or any stand-alone range) or separate cooktop + wall ovens is a fundamental one which will impact the entire cabinet design, and must be decided very early in the process. If you have the desire, space, and budget for a 48 incher, I'd insist upon it, as one cannot be easily retrofitted into any kitchen when/if the existing cooktop dies. It's perfectly OK to economize by re-using a fridge and dishwasher, as the holes they occupy are standard and new ones can be easily popped in when the old ones die. But cooktops are different. There are no standards for shape/size between brands so matching a new one to an existing cut-out in your counter tops can really limit your choices down the road.
