Ill make the assumption that if it’s their choice, it’s a good computer.

ASUS are highly rated for gamers. In fact, they are known for it and have a line of laptops specifically developed for this purpose. I have an ASUS myself about 3 y.o. and although I am not a gamer, it is a high powered, fast beast with an extensive graphic capacity, which I need for my work. It is also a 2 in 1 with a swipe screen and built in camera.

These are not cheap but worth every penny as a durable, reliable, high capacity machine.

I have an ASUS too and I'm happy with it. It's probably more than I needed since I mostly just got it for when I go camping.

You can search specifically for "gaming laptop", not just a laptop that one can also game on. Get as much memory as you can afford so her games will run smoothly.

Sorry, I have no experience with Dell or HP laptops but Asus Tuf gaming laptops are good if she is playing MMORPG ( massively multiplayer online role-playing game)

The graphics card is important for gaming, SSD size, processor and other specs will affect the price depending on what she would like. I personally love the Ryzen 5 processor and have it in both my PC and my laptop, but again its personal choice.

Dell for me...but don't think you can go wrong with either.

I just bought a Dell refurbished - very very happy with it.

I had a MSI which was sold as a gaming laptop. Never looked to see who actually manufactured it. I purchased it to increase the speed of some simple games I played then discovered it was not the laptop but the speed of my connection that was the problem. Before you start looking ask and write down the names of the games she plays. That will give the clerks if they are gamers a better idea of which laptop will work with her games.

It sounds like she's not really a "gamer", so either one would probably be fine for her. You could Google " HP computer reviews" or "Dell computer reviews", and go from there.

I have asked her to send me the names of the games she plays. Learned from her that now she plays only one game; she got tired of the other one and said she has no plans to ever play it again. It is good to know that she doesn't really need a "gaming" laptop. Thank you so very much.

I am sorry if I caused offence , I was in no way implying she is a "gamer", a lot of people enjoy and play online games without being labeled a "gamer".

I was just going by the fact that she plays a game simultaneously with people from all over the world and sometimes those games can be graphic intensive, of course she may be perfectly happy with a non gaming laptop and there are many many options and price ranges to choose from.

I was just trying to be helpful and wish her all the best in her search.

My husband has an older Dell laptop ( probably at least 8 years old now) that he says has been very faithful.

I think Dell has been consistently above average in quality and durability for a good while while over the same period, HP has been below average.

I bought a mid-range priced Dell laptop (neither one of the more expensive nor one of the less expensive ones) about 6 months ago. It has a touchscreen, a solid state drive (SSD) that makes it very fast, a camera with excellent resolution for video calls (I've been on the receiving end when my wife was using it) , good battery life, and other solid features. I made the purchase decision based on some comparison looking, it seemed to be a model with good features at an attractive price. I hoped it would be a good choice and it's turned out to be even nicer than I expected.

I find that a laptop which has a keyboard with a numeric pad very convenient. But I think they are only on 17" models. Of course, you can always add an external USB keyboard and mouse.

I just ordered a Dell 15" laptop. Inspirion. It was $1,300 which did not make me happy. It does has good memory and solid state. It has a good video card.

I went to Dell because I have had Dells in the past and they still work. I'm typing on one which is about 12 yrs old. It's low on memory and I bought a HP 13" because I was traveling last year.

This HP is the worse piece of junk I have every owned. I have had Dells and a Asus computers and all are working or retired. HP is junk, junk, junk.

Seven months after owning the HP the keyboard started to go. I contacted HP and found out it only had a 6 month warranty. I've never owned a computer with a 6 month warranty.

After dealing with the 'e,l,o keys no longer working, the .period key quit. Then the right hinge just snapped off so the screen is now propped up. Tried a wireless keyboard and it wouldn't work. The mouse worked but not the keyboard. I tried the keyboard on two old computers and it works perfectly, so the problem is the HP computer.

Now that the hinge and keyboard doesn't work, its useless. Two years old now. I will never buy a HP again.

So, I went on Dell's website and ordered a new laptop.

Jane, although you solved your problem by getting a new computer, did you ever try plugging in another keyboard to your old HP? I have a 2-year old HP and, although I can't sing it's praises, it has been working OK. My main complaint with the keyboard is that it's too small and I'm always hitting the Caps Lock button! And I hate those "mousepads" on any laptop, so I always have a real mouse (not furry!).

I will point out that this thread was started by the OP who was looking for an appropriate spec’ed and presumably reasonably priced laptop for her daughter. I’m not sure that having this thread veer off into expensive laptops without reference to the OP’s original goal and needs is helpful. Based on what the OP has said about her daughter‘s minimal and non-intensive computer needs, a less expensive laptop could easily be entirely adequate, now and for a number of years to come. I just looked at Dell’s web site, for example, and they have some well-spec’ed and well-reviewed 15” laptops in the $400-500 range.

The Dell Inspiron laptop I described above, purchased directly from the company, cost about one-half that much.
