ugh. daughter dropped laptop and has screen issues

My daughter told me that she noticed her screen is coming apart. It still works, but there's some sort of a gap. The last time I had a laptop screen issue, it was an old laptop, so I bought the same kind (non working) on ebay for about $50.

This one is pretty new, so the least expensive I've seen for the LCD is $79. From the description, that may be for JUST the LCD. If that's the case, I'm really no better off. But I don't want to send the laptop off for a few weeks (she needs it for school) for repair.

I haven't seen it yet. My hope is that I can take it apart and there will be some way to snap it back together.

If not, I'm somewhat tempted to use clear packing tape to hold it together. It's currently working, so maybe that will buy us enough time that the prices will drop.

If the screen is still working, then you probably don't have to replace the LCD. It may just be a trim piece around the screen. It's difficult to offer any suggestions without knowing exactly what's wrong.

The laptop's all set up - and dd received it on Tuesday. For now we'll try open office. She does have a desktop pc with word if she needs it. And at school they use Mac's. So no matter what we use at home, it won't be quite the same as in school. abreeze - thanks for the link. It's beyond anything she or I will do now - but one or both of us might get more versed in powerpoint over time. That's a helpful comparison. I created recovery disks - but when I went to create a password reset disk, the laptop kept asking me to insert a disk. There was a disk in there. I even switched disks in case one was bad. But it was birthday day - so I figured I'd get to this later. Well - it came back and bit me in the butt. Birthday night had some trauma. After dinner, my mother fell backwards and hit her head on the sidewalk. I took her to the ER. My daughter was distraught - and the parent controls had logged her off at 9pm. Husband thought this was a reasonable exception - so he logged into the admin account for her. She immediately eliminated the time controls. No big deal, I thought - I'll reset them another time. Somehow she tricked my husband into entering the admin password again - told him she'd restarted the computer by accident. Well - that sneak had gotten him to enter the password in a field that allowed her to change it. She changed the passwords and locked us out of the laptop. So this is where that password reset disk would have been helpful - to override what she did and reset a new admin password. So this is partly a note to people about the important of creating a password reset disk (or set up on flash drive). I'd never even heard of this before. We're at the beach with my daughter and friend - it's instead of a birthday party. So we're not having the confrontation with this weekend. Monday - we tell her she has to hand back the reins for the admin account (or no laptop). The joys of parenting preteens. It took her less than 24 hours to violate most of the terms of the contract she signed. Sure wish I'd had that reset password disk. When I get admin control back, I'll be sure to create one somehow. (I assume at this point my only option is getting her to give me that new password she created.) Thanks. Lynn.

Thanks for all the input. I did try hooking a monitor to the laptop to eliminate the possibility that it was just the screen or the cable that connects--it showed nothing. I agree that the repair may not be cost effective--but wanted to try everything I could before purchasing another PC. Also just tried Zep16's advise to keep hitting the F8 key, but just as he suspected--the menu never appeared. Although laptops are difficult to troubleshoot because replacement parts aren't readily available. We do have 2 of these laptops exactly alike and I wondered if it would be advisable to switch out the hard drives, etc... to see if I could pin point the problem. Since my knowledge is limited, I wasn't sure if taking the hard drive from the working machine was a good idea. Thanks again--All input appreciated.

Those of you wanting a laptop, definitely read the post Have you switched from a PC to a laptop? lots of good points in it, not only Windows computers but Mac's as well. My pain management doc has a Sony Vaio that he loves as well as 2 Mac laptops; he's mentioned one other but can't justify buying another. Wish I could remember what brand it was. Before buying be sure to research. As johnmari says about her Dell experience, unfortunately, that's what most people say. They also string you along until your 30 days are up to return it, then end up sending you a similar system, usually minus premium software you've paid for; and it's a refurbished machine. I have Windows and a Mac.. While I've been using the Mac mini, Windows is just so much easier and once I get the Windows machine finished (still not done building/adding parts) I will switch to that full time. Not sure if I posted in the other thread about our Compaq laptop, I bought it for my son when he graduated in 2003, that thing was a floor model and is still running. We blew a drive out in an airport (got hit against something) but installing the new drive was painless. I would buy one again, depending on how much they are compared to a Sony. I love the look of the Sony screens; we own 3 monitors with the XBrite technology..

It may be a sound/noise that is above your hearing limit, but still well within the dog's limit - think dog whistle. Do you have any ultrasonic devices such as a motion or intrusion detector? Installed any of those new motion detector light switches? Ultrasonic devices may make noise that is uncomfortable or even painful to a dog or cat. Others source of noise that can be annoying to pets are transformers such as a doorbell and thermostat transformer, transformers in electrical/electronic equipment, and transformers and relays for low voltage lighting controls.

I guess I need to decide to replace its keyboard or watch for a replacement sale . n key is giving me a stiff finger for too long - and the others are requiring a bit more pressure now. Odd for me to have to be watching what I type.. I'm used to never watching screen while I type.. look at the tv maybe too much, or daydream.

fwiw... Last time I replaced a toshiba keyboard, I decided to clean the fan while it was open .. mistake... 2-tiny posts that the fan power connector plugs into, both so easy instantly popped of the main board when I tried to unplug it .. no way to solder them back. Thats when I decided.. time for new laptop. About the same age as this one.. approaching 4 years.

I know it's tough to diagnose without seeing it. That's what I told her, too. She's going to bring it by so I can look at it. I'm hoping it's something that I can fix by just reconnecting the LCD to the back, but I don't know the extent of the damage yet.

I tried finding a link for disassembling this model, but didn't have any luck. If you can find a link for the HP Pavilion DV7-4180us, it would be a big help. I can probably figure it out without the instructions, but sometimes there are some small things that make it a lot easier if you know about them.

She brought it over and the LCD was completely undamaged. In the corner, it was slightly separated from the frame. The frame was damaged a bit, bent so that the corner of the LCD would not "snap" into place. It would stay in place if we held it with our fingers, but wouldn't be secure.

There's also a dent in the base by the keyboard (same corner when it's closed), but that's cosmetic.

I turned it off, pried the corner of the frame a bit and snapped the LCD back into place. We both heard it snap in and I could feel it make the connection. To be on the safe side, we used some clear packing tape.

You can certainly see the tape, and if you look from certain angles, you can see that it's not quite square, but all in all, it's in pretty good shape.

When she called, I thought the repairs would be a couple of hundred dollars if I did them myself, so I'm VERY relieved that it was so easy to fix. And I'm also relieved that my daughter, a senior in high school, didn't insist that we needed to replace the entire case since it no longer looked new.

Thanks, Genes. For now, I was able to get it in good enough condition just by bending the bezel with a pair of pliers and snapping the LCD back in, but that will come in handy if anything else happens to it. And I bookmarked the main page so I can find it if I need manuals for any other laptops.
